The Thai Royal Police came out to warn Thais not to fall victim to romance scams after statistics showed that over 403 police reports in January 2023 were related to love frauds, resulting in substantial financial losses to numerous victims totaling over 190 million baht.

As Valentine’s Day is approaching, Thai Police decided to raise awareness about romance scams that are still rampant in the country, with women in their 40s being the most targeted, according to statistics.

Pol. Lt. Col. Noppawan Panya, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police, told the public on Sunday, February 12th, that 403 police reports nationwide were linked to dating frauds, divided into 168 cases of the victims getting deceived to love and transfer money to the scammers and 235 cases of the victims getting lured into a fraudulent investment.

Pol. Lt. Col. Noppawan described four kinds of tricks that the scammers use to dupe the victims, which included:

- Creating fake hope or sympathy to trick the victim into transferring money

- Luring the victims into a fake investment

Life must be hard for those old and lonely women.

I wonder if some of them at some time think about how many guys they rejected when they were young.

Surprising-Reason-Why-Women-reject-men-m

So a woman is old at over 40? This happens all over the world. Even girls in their 20 this get a grip.

You know many more go unreported out of shame for being duped.

There must be so much more.

Staggering losses within a single month.

Nothing wrong with women in their 40’s, many are extremely attractive …twenty year ago I married MrsJ when she was 48 …best thing I ever did in my whole life.

Naive is as naive does.....

Only the fools get scammed out of money.... be it via a bar girl/boy or online.

If people can't smell a scam when asked to part with large amounts of money then they must be very gullible.

The problem is that the scammers  play with the feelings and naivety of these women, since they usually lack evil.  Most of them mentally immature and easy to manipulate.  workers women who live alone and it is difficult for them to have time to socialize. The new tool of internet makes them vulnerable and they fall prey easily..

I disagree about the negro part.  This is an African scam that has been going on since the internet went public.

In the start, is was banking you just got

Or we found that you are qualified for

Or your grandchild is in jail, and we need x amount to secure their release.

Now it is promises of romance.

The other side of this that is not reported is the number of Thai ladies that do the same thing to foreign men.

In my experience in Thailand women feel old when they are 30.

And in a way I agree with them. I, and many others, would never start a relationship with a woman over 30.

Great photo, not even a token white guy in the lineup. I guess loneliness is a powerful feeling, but you would have thought that this scam has been so beaten to death that these women would click. Suppose not... but a crime for really low individuals to commit..

Under certain circumstances it can happen to anyone imo, especially at low or vulnerable points in life. Of course it's obvious to everyone else, which makes it appear stupid.

Block off Soi's 2 thru 7 on Sukumvit, with the Army,  raid every guesthouse, apartment residence and arrest every foreigner living there.  Make them show proper identification, passport visa, work permit, unable to do that, confiscate every cell phone and computer for forensics.  The only way to slow this down - notice I did not say eliminate - is to put on the steel gloves and come out swinging anyone found not guilty??  Apology from Police and let 'em go, otherwise, the rest go into the clink............Just Saying

Scams now are very sophisticated even with convincing websites to back them up. There is a post office scam I've had a few times which links to a very convincing "Post Office" site. Strange thing is it's always when we expect a delivery.  Romance scams are low tec but people are lonely. A friend had a thai girl want him to invest in but coin with her, if he didn't then he didn't love her...he obviously didn't love her...lol
