Charter Court to rule on non-Thai inclusion in calculation for constituency MPs

The Election Commission (EC) decided today (Tuesday) to ask the Constitutional Court to rule whether non-Thais can be included in the population for the calculation of the number of constituency MPs for each respective province.

There will be a total of 400 constituency MPs and 100 party-list MPs in the House following the forthcoming general election.

Earlier, the EC included non-Thais in the population, but the decision has raised widespread criticism, with several political parties and political academics voicing their disagreement, on the grounds that non-Thais are not eligible to vote and, therefore, they should be excluded from the calculation.

Geez why is this an issue?

We have no rights here unless it serves politician's purposes to get more constituencies.

Why would they think to include us in the population. Unless they want to give us residency, like a green card individual is given in the US, just count the Thai in a census.

Although foreigners can not vote, it's an issue since it's currently a factor in determining voting districts/boundaries/borders.

If Non Thais cannot vote why should they be included into the population count?

I expect it predominately has to do with the distribution of some pots of money which are based on total population in area regardless of citizenship.  Like funds to build/maintain/expand roads, sewers, water systems, electrical lines, just a whole variety of things.  And when it comes to distribution of funds politicians always want to base that on total population in their area whether they are Thai citizens or farangs.
