From this week's Matichon Weekend comes the following sentence:

"จุดอ่อน" ตรงนี้ พล.อ.เปรม ก็คงทราบดี ที่ผ่านมาจึงมีข่าวกระเซ็นกระสายออกมาว่า พล.อ.เปรม ได้ตัดสินใจถอยตัวออกมาจากกลุ่มซีพีอย่างเงียบๆ แล้ว

The question is the meaning of "กระเซ็นกระสาย". The first word per Lexitron is

กระเซ็น [V] spatter; splash; spurt; shower; sprinkle; spot Syn. กระเด็น

The second [per Domnern Sathienpong] is กระสาย – a portion; a sampling.

Googled, the phrase seems to be used most often with "news", as it is above. I wonder this phrase is the Thai equivalent of the English phrase, "splashed [or splattered] all over the front page [of the newspaper]". If this is true, then the word "กระสาย" is added just for onomatapoetic value.

I was unable to find the entire term in any dictionary, although it does show up on the Internet. Interestingly, however, the similar sounding word "กระเส็นกระสาย" is in the dictionary, save for the tone. Lexitron has กระเส็นกระสาย as "[ADV] spatteringly; splashingly; sprinklingly."

The original Matichon sentence may thus be rendered,

"We know very well what the 'weak points' of General Prem have been in the past. The news has been splashed all over the papers that General Prem has already decided to quietly removed himself from the Board of CP."

(Two points: first, I make no political judgements; my interests are language-oriented only. Second, my understanding of the syntax of the quoted sentence is shaky; I am having difficulty parsing out the various phrases in the sentence. I would appreciate any clarification of its meaning and translation.)

I cant comment too much on the specific words in question...but just wanted to point that the first part of your translation is wrong....

the weak points in the sentence refers to something that (must have) been mentioned in a prior sentence...cos the sentence is actually saying "Gen. Prem is aware of this weakness, hence the news that has leaked out that Gen. Prem has quietly withdrawn himself from the CP Group"

I could be wrong...but from the sentence I would tend to think that กระเซ็นกระสาย refers to ...oh dear....I think I cant explain it sowwy....but anyhow....it doesnt make me think of splattered all over the news...but rather more of a tiny/secretive news that has trickered out... (is trickered the right word?)

Ill wait for meadish and the other experts to shed more light on this

I think you mean "trickled out" and, yes, "trickled out" is the opposite of "splashed all over".

BTW, my wife reminded me that the word "กระเซ็น" appears in the old but still popular song "บัวขาว" in the sentence " . . . น้ำใสไหลกระเซ็นเห็นตัวปลา. . .". and, I now realize, if the water were really a raging current, one would not be able to see the fish in the stream." I am quite sure 'leaked' or 'trickled' is the best translation here, just as you write, MiG.

The prevalence of กระเส็นกระสาย and no instances of กระเซ็นกระสาย in any of my dictionaries, makes me suspect กระเซ็นกระสาย could be a corruption/typo, or at any rate a less common form of the expression with the same meaning.

The meaning of กระเส็นกระสาย in my monolingual พจนานุกรมไทย by ซีเอ็ด is listed as เศษเล็กน้อย or นิดหน่อย which ties in reasonably well with 'leak' or 'trickle'.
