I am an English teacher , from the Philippines. My name is Paul, 28 years of age. I am a degree holder of English with seven years teaching experience.

I have number of personal qualities which I believe make me an effective teacher. I have well developed communication skills, which enable me to work collaboratively and I enjoy working as part a team. I am well organized, with good time-management skills. No matter what the looks is whether Asian or Westerners, however, it doesn't matter. The essence of being a real educator are qualification, experience and of course dedication to his profession. It is by heart and passion that got me to be a teacher. Despite of my Asian looks; it is an essential attribute that bonds my rapport to my students and fellow teachers. Basically, teaching is not an inborn skill, thus, it must be studied upon. Moreover, teachers are not created through a 120- hour course. Though there is a so-called TEFL certificate, teachers training is a must to be qualified for teaching profession, thus, an English major makes a difference. In hiring a foreign teacher, it is important to consider the course that has been studied that suits to a specific job.

Having worked for almost three years in Thailand at Private Catholic School and a secondary Government School , I am now a seasoned Educator of Thai Students (young and adult) I have seven years solid teaching experience in ESL industry. I am now looking for a new job especially in secondary school where student’s mastery of the English language is recognized.

Welcome, Paul. I have moved your opening post (OP) to our Teaching in Thailand Forum.

I think most of us, whether we're teachers or hiring folks at Thai schools, understand that anybody with an English major for his BA degree, and seven years of ESL/EFL experience, doesn't need a TEFL certificate, and we don't need to be convinced of it. Good luck.

If anybody has sound, positive advice to give Paul - nothing critical - please go ahead. Otherwise, we'll leave it up here as a closed topic and people can send a PM (private message) to him.

The 120 hour TEFL course does not qualify you as a teacher, it is justs one of many requirement to teach English in Thailand. Good luck. For an English major I'd have thought your English may be a tad better, which goes to show that just because someone has a major in English does not mean that they can use English 100% correctly.....................

Paul - what you are saying has been debated many times and be it good or be it not so good it falls back to the old saying when in Rome do as the Romans do.

In other words you have enough going against :jap:you already don't introduce another reason for "we will be in contact" and never the contact comes!!

On the useage of "English" be assured there are not many "native & non native" that can lay claim to being 100% correct 100% of the time - learn to roll with the punches.

I have a TEFL but it doesnt state how many hours I have gone for, Ive heard of 60-80-90-100 and 120 hour courses, but all i remember was going full-time for 2 weeks straight, just curious does it matter how many hours I went or as long as I have the TEFL im good to go pretty much anywhere? as for paul goodluck on finding a job theres plenty of philipinos on ajarn.com you should check it out and bond with them.

In fact, ThaiVisa may soon have a separate forum to post your personal "job wanted" ads. Thanks for the comments so far. I'll close this one now, and you know you're all welcome to post on these subjects in the regular places.
