The poll is based on the government’s immigration deal with Rwanda and was conducted before Suella Braverman unveiled the government’s Illegal Migration Bill this week to turn back all arrivals in small boats, saying the legislation was “necessary, proportionate and humanitarian”, despite backlash from civil servants and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Just under half (44 per cent) of those surveyed said the government’s deportation plan made them feel “proud to be British”, while 30 per cent said they were ashamed of the move.

How could anyone be ashamed of a plan to deport people with no right to be there, have just paid a lot of money to traffickers to enter illegally and who have only done it to grab what they can? Want to claim 'asylum' -do it legally by presenting your passport and evidence to back up your claim.

Home Office civil servants expressed their displeasure that disparaging comments about them had been put out in Suella Braverman's name.  Since then she has denied authorship and/or prior knowledge of the comments and has been seeking to repair the damage.

The OP's post is rather misleading on this point.

I don't know many details. But I know that all those people in those little boats start in France.

Is France at war? Do they have to fear for their lives in France?

If all these people are desperately trying to apply for asylum, why don't they do it in France - without a dangerous and illegal trip with a little boat?

I'm very surprised to see the Independent tossing out this nonsense.  The British public does NOT like this plan.  Less than 50% like it in fact.

So why do not the likes of them come up with a plan then.

Because most of them are tossers.

There is a stark difference between Ukrainian refugees fleeing to the UK and those paying criminals to traffic them across the channel..

A majority of the Ukrainians are women and children fleeing an ongoing war where they are in real danger of being killed.

The majority of the boat arrivals are young men with a warped understanding of European customs and way of life.. They have been promised much by the trafficers and believe the cash they have spent is a good investment for a richer future. They regard women as more promiscuous than those at home who they keep under wraps and under the thumb. They have a sense of entitlement that if not quickly gratified leads to resentment. Wish such misunderstanding its hard to see how they will integrate and be useful members of society.

No political party will ever be capable of stopping these economic migrants. Any and every plan to deal with the issue is doomed to failure from the get go because there will always be objections from someone somewhere to whatever is proposed. So, apart from minor tweaking nothing will get done until it will all come to an ugly head and a lot of violence will be the result.

Why can't they deal with it? just follow the Thai example. Stick them in detention centres, not hotels, give them one meal a day and keep them there until somebody pays their fare home. They would stop arriving straight away. In some things Thailand is an advanced country.

I think it is all publicity to stop paying potentially criminal organizations from assisting them to cross the channel. If it worked for Australia it can work for Great Britain.

Rwanda is simply Britain's Nauru.

That's a start.

As we have already seen. Starting is one thing , seeing plans through to the finish is another altogether.. The Rwanda idea is a prime example.

I agree with you but the UK is not Thailand which is why I chose to live here not there.

The reality is something else. To quote Pink Floyd :

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.

Yeah the UK saying as I remember in UK  "charity begins at home"  has been hi-jacked by the tree huggers.

This Garry Lineker story is steeling all the headlines over the past two days, but I  found this:

The Prime Minister announced the creation of a new detention centre in Northern France, a new command centre bringing enforcement teams together in one place for the first time and an extra 500 new officers patrolling French beaches. The measures will be funded by Britain as part of a £500 million three-year Anglo-French deal, from the Telegraph.

Is I see it why should the Uk taxpays pay money to France, when the French could stop them boarding the boats, as we know the French want them out the way, so they do not have to look after them in their detention camps.

Does anyone know how the French stop illegals coming into France, I know they have a problem on the boarder with Italy, if the French stopped more of them entering France it would help everyone.

Not only that but a lot of these "refugees" are from Albania, an EU candidate country that doesn't persecute people but does have thriving criminal organisations which profit from this madness: https://archive.ph/lSXqI

Any claim by the Gary Linkekars of this world that this is a human rights issue is just cynical virtue signalling.

As for the Tories, they have absolutely no intention of solving this issue. They just cynically play the immigration card at every single election but the truth is they want mass immigration just as much as the left because it keeps wages low and house prices high.

The Tories are trying to stop the illegal immigrants , they have set up camps in Rwanda and are paying France money to stop them leaving France .

If Tories wanted them to keep wages low  , they would allow them to work

Wishful thinking. How many of these illegal immigrants will end up in Rwanda? We're talking about less that 1% in practice. And paying France is an old policy that has never worked in the past. Most of these migrants will end up in the black economy and the Tories know it.

Why do Tory supporters never learn? In every election for over half a century they've promised to get tough on immigration and yet immigration is now at an all-time high with the Tories in power.

Its the lefty do gooders stopping it by taking legal action  .

Had there been no legal appeals , we would probably have direct flights from Calais to Rwanda already .

The Tory Government has also made it practically impossible for illegal immigrants to rent accommodations its the landlord legal requirement to check peoples visas

Rwanda plan would not reduce the numbers by even one- we have to take as many back as we send that Rwanda want to get shot of, total farce.

The idea was to make it unattractive for people to attempt to come across in boats , they would be less inclined to want to attempt it, if they knew they would end up in Rwanda
