Thailand is preparing for its general election with the publication yesterday of a royal decree on the dissolution of parliament.


The Thai constitution stipulates that polls must be held between 45 and 60 days after the dissolution of parliament. This means the polls will take place between May 4 and 19. The final election date is due to be announced by the Election Commission and published in the Royal Gazette.

 

THREE CHINESE SUSPECTS arrested for extorting more than 3 million baht from a Chinese woman are behind bars. Police say 4 charges have been filed against the suspects for false imprisonment, extortion, demanding a ransom and carrying weapons in public.


The Chevron oil company has suspended operations at an oil rig in the gulf of Thailand, this follows last week's accident that resulted in the death of a crew man in an oil container vessel.


Chevron stated it had recovered the body of the crewman, and production at the oil and gas field was on hold.

Police raided more than 600 locations in the south yesterday and made over  200 arrests, in an operation to combat drugs and firearms. 


Property and assets  worth more than 17 million baht were seized. . 


The relatives of a police lieutenant colonel who fired multiple gunshots into the air at his residence last week and was then shot and killed by police commandos, have requested that law enforcement and public prosecutors investigate whether the use of force was excessive.

 

According to the family's attorney, the 51-year-old officer's parents suspect that the police commandos used excessive force when they ended the standoff, resulting in his death.  The national police chief has ordered a full investigation into the incident.

 

More than 50 Department of National Parks, officers brought equipment to extinguish a forest fire that had been burning for 3 days at the top of Hin Lek Fai.


There was concern at the fires proximity to local villages and impact of air pollution over populated areas. 

 

Saturday , the 25th of march will see lights turned off for one hour to mark a symbolic commitment to coping with climate change,


Last years one hour event reduced carbon emissions by over 12 thousand tons in the capital,

The United Nations "survival guide for humanity" was published yesterday following the adoption of a key report by almost 200 countries. Their report offers the most comprehensive overview of climate change science in almost a decade.

 

Significantly increasing investments in green energy and allocating resources to adapt to climate impacts, particularly in the least developed nations,  it stated benefits would be seen by lessening future losses and damage to both people and ecosystems.
