Thai Rath reported that the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct cases denied bail to Region 1 immigration policeman Pol Lt Prawit Phonjangreet.

It concerns the alleged extortion of a Chinese businessman who has left the country after his interpreter went to the Din Daeng police in fear.

He is charged with a long rap sheet involving extortion, abduction and making threats of physical harm using force and violence.

The court in denying bail said that the suspect had undermined faith in the justice system as a serving police officer and would tamper with witnesses if allowed out. He was ordered held.

Three other policemen are expected in court today, reported Thai Rath.

Siam Rath in another report said that a man called Opas was helping police with their inquiries. He is a passport agent who helps Chinese nationals.

Thai Rath reported that the court heard a mountain of damning evidence against lieutenant Prawit in an elaborate shakedown of a Chinese businessman named only as Tager.

Several other police were involved including Major Jiraphat Bunnam, Sen Pol Sgt Maj Pheerasak Yimphaiboon and Pol Maj Sorawit Inlap.

Also two other people who were agents or facilitators are also involved. These are not police and one is clearly the suspect named as Opas.

The case began on March 9th when Tager contacted Prawit via phone at his home in Din Daeng for help in getting a passport at the Department of Consular Affairs at the government complex building in Chang Wattana.

They went next morning on motorcycle taxis and were met outside by an agent. After being told to wait for an hour they ended up back at Prawit's house where the elaborate shakedown of the Chinese man took further twists amid threats of prosecution.

The Chinese man was told that he would be prosecuted by immigration if he didn't comply.

Ultimately after a large amount of haggling, threats and intimidation in  which the Chinese man was driven around the Chaeng Wattana area, and taken for a meal his son in China transferred 10 million baht via an E-Token.

ASEAN NOW notes that the extraordinary detail that the court was presented with looks like an open and shut case against immigration and also against corrupt agents who work with them to extort foreigners.

Mind you, that has been said before.

Stay tuned to ASEAN NOW for more details on this case.

Not for some expats

Makes me glad that I brave the lines at the IO and not use an agent.

I asked a farang yesterday what he would do if he was unable to use an agent in Thailand. He said he'd have to do his a trip to to the Philippines every year. I didn't understand how that works.????

About time these scum got their comuppence.

They are not above the law.

Confusing.

Pol Lt Prawit has a long rap sheet?

Maybe it's just terrible translation, but how do you get to be a cop with a long rap sheet?

I can see becoming a MP or Dep PM with a rap sheet, but cops too?

Where is the money?
