Thailand's deputy national police chief yesterday explained why officers took 15 hours to conclude a standoff with a man who had killed 3 people from his home in Petchaburi. Saying he was not an active shooter,’  but 3 people are dead after his shooting spree, the 29 year old  shooter refused to give himself up and fired some 50 shots overnight, he was eventually shot and killed by officers early yesterday.

 

Two female activists who held a hunger strike for 53 days which ended  on March 11th posted that they left the Hospital,  they vowed to continue with their campaign to demand the immediate, unconditional release of all political detainees, including themselves. Both face lese majeste charges,  they want to see reform of the judicial process and abolition of the lese majeste law. Many university lecturers, students and human rights activists support the women's campaign.

 

A controversial gold mine in Thailand restarted operations yesterday more than six years after the government forced it to close over health and environmental concerns.


The chatree project has faced serious opposition by legal disputes and protests by villagers who said it poisoned crops and livestock.


A senior manager at the mine Rob Kinnaired "It means the mine can expand and employ more people. There are opportunities to help local communities by investing in their livelihoods.

 

One person was killed when a large trailer truck came off the road and ran down an embankment landing on a railway track close to Onnuch in Bangkok yesterday afternoon.


And:   2 minivan buses collided yesterday in Phuket injuring 4 tourists.


Locally
The director of Thailands state railways confirmed the new railway track between Hua Hin and Prachuab Khirikhan will open next year.


The new 84 kilometer track that  runs alongside the old track is undergoing testing for safety and passes 12 upgraded railway stations.
