Pattaya — Tourist Police are scanning the city for foreigners working illegally as tour guides in Pattaya. The officers disclosed that they have apprehended over 5,531 illegal tour guides across Thailand over the past three months.

Several Tourist Police officers led by Pol. Maj. Gen. Pongsiam Meekanthong, deputy commissioner of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, were dispatched across Pattaya yesterday, March 25th, to prevent illegal activities with a focus on foreigners secretly working as tour guides.

The Pattaya News notes that foreigners are not allowed to work as tour guides in Thailand, as a tour guide is considered a restricted occupation that is reserved for Thai nationals only.

Foreigners will not steal our bread and butter jobs from locals.

You will only come here for holidays, spend your money and go home.

If you insist on residing here you will not work in a normal fashion, only in those occupations that we say you can.

more illegal tour guides than there are tourists LOL

lots of CN guides come with the groups from CN, are employed in CN, paid in CN etc.
not a surprise this, but cannot see this helping tourism in anyway
and funny coincidence they crackdown of 5000 guides
and CN has warnings about visiting here......

Thai guides will only take visitors to pre-determined locations, shops, restaurants etc to ensure of their little kick-backs.

Yes, I had forgotten about that side of the game..... mind you, Chinese guides likely do similar, taking them to Chinese owned businesses... (Mike's  Shopping Plaza springs to mind).

Fine. How about the Thai "guides" becoming fluent in foreign languages and perhaps even study up on whatever attraction they are going to haul the rubes to? So they could say more than "There's the ice factory. Nice place to get some thinking done" and so on...

I never recall fluency being an issue. The jobs are just stolen to keep control and money tight.

Many students in better BKK HS graduate with reasonable skills in English, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean even German. The problem is this students have bigger dreams than working as tour guides.
