BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized that Thailand and its neighboring countries are committed to addressing the escalating issue of transboundary haze.

 

Following a recent trilateral meeting between Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai assured the public that senior officials from the three countries will hold detailed discussions on the prevention of burning practices.

 

He stressed that neighboring countries are also facing this common problem and are rushing to take action. Thailand will also share its knowledge on the burning issue by proposing the establishment of small-scale community power plants.

 

When asked about the case of citizens planning to file a lawsuit against the prime minister for failing to resolve the situation, the deputy premier explained that the issue did not arise under the current administration. He noted that it has in fact been a long-standing issue going back 20 years.

 

Minister Don confirmed that the ASEAN bloc is working to address this problem and has been tackling it continuously. He added that the problem was further exacerbated after the pandemic when human activities that contribute to air pollution resumed.

 

The minister also said the government has measures to address the problem, both in the short and long term.

 

The matter will be discussed again at the upcoming ASEAN meeting.

There doesn't appear to be any haze between Thailand and Myanmar. They are in perfect sync politically.

It was too late 40 years ago. 

 

I have no doubt that they wil ‘closely monitor the situation’, as they have been saying for over two decades. And then do absolutely nothing about it, as they have been doing forever.

Probably, but unlike other problems they dodge, they can't corrupt their way out of the consequences that will also eventually harm them and theirs.

I doubt that they and their families are exposed to the poison air outside for more than 20 to 30 minutes per day. The rest of their time is spent in air conditioned and air purified cars, offices, and homes.

What they will not discuss, is why Thailand refuses to go after their big agra bedfellows, and their extremely destructive farming methods and the havoc they cause with the air and water.

At least one NGO is calling it what it is. Field burning, not forest fires is the main cause of bad air here.

Not terribly difficult to resolve. Though, there might require some subjective intelligence involved.....which might present problems, of course.

No. I have been up and down the Laos border the last 3 months. Where I was it was far, far more bush burning than agro leftovers.  It's not ONE thing, its is ALL those things.  Bush, crops, garbage, if it burns they will light it!.

The smoke doesn’t cross borders, right? If the Thai mushroomers, ag farmers and all stop burning, then blue skies will appear, right? Because the smoke stops at the borders and won’t pour in from the west and north, just the same as the weather.
