Nearly one in four children under five in Kuala Lumpur are stunted, while 12.4% are underweight and 8% are affected by wasting, according to figures cited by health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad.

Speaking at the launch of an urban community feeding programme with Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Dzulkefly said the data showed a serious child-malnutrition problem in the federal territory.

Support for at-risk children

The programme supports affected children aged one to six for six months, with monthly growth monitoring, nutritious food baskets and fresh fruit and vegetables every two weeks. Similar schemes operate in Lembah Pantai and Wangsa Maju.

A double burden

Dzulkefly said Malaysia faces a double burden of malnutrition: undernutrition exists alongside overnutrition. The survey found 7.5% of Kuala Lumpur children under five were overweight. The health ministry is visiting communities to identify at-risk children who do not regularly attend health facilities.

What it means for foreigners in Malaysia

For foreign families living in Kuala Lumpur, the figures underline the importance of regular child health checks, balanced nutrition and seeking support early if growth or feeding is a concern. Parents can consult clinics and local health services for advice on monitoring young children’s development.
