Songkran celebrations turn sour: Over 100 lives lost, 1,000 injured in road accidents

According to the Director General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Boontham Lertsukheekasem, 114 fatalities and 1,064 injuries were recorded due to road accidents nationwide during the Songkran holiday. Between Tuesday and Thursday, there were 1,055 traffic incidents leading to these casualties a report today revealed.

Zoos in Thailand and Vietnam collaborate to protect endangered cranes

The Zoological Park Organization (ZPO) is joining forces with the Vietnam Zoos Association to increase the Eastern Sarus Crane population in Vietnam.

PM Prayut to join 10 UTN rallies in push for election victory

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is set to attend at least 10 campaign rallies across Thailand, hosted by the United Thai Nation (UTN) Party in preparation for the May 14 General Election. As the UTN’s chief strategist, the 69 year old Gen. Prayut will start his campaign tour in Bangkok, and will put on festival attire to participate in Songkran festivities alongside residents.

Legend Siam Pattaya Sets New World Record for Performing Thai Greeting

Legend Siam Pattaya has set a new Guinness World Record by collectively performing a Thai greeting (wai) along with saying “Sawasdee (hello) Welcome to Thailand” with 500 attendees.

Conflicting data on Songkran road accidents as Phuket records “first” death

At a meeting held at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday morning, officials were presented with the latest tally of road accidents, injuries, and fatalities on day 2 of the Songkran road safety campaign.

Phuket officials vow to crack down on operators renting bikes to unlicenced tourists

Phuket officials have (once again) vowed to crack down on motorbike renters who provide bikes to tourists who don’t have a valid licence. On Wednesday, provincial governor Narong Woonciew chaired a meeting attended by Vice Governor Anupap Rodkwan Yodrabam and the head of the Phuket office of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Udomporn Kan. Also present were the heads of other relevant government agencies.

Three police officers injured in insurgent attack in Narathiwat province

Three police officers were injured when an unknown number of southern insurgents attacked their outpost, in Su-ngai Padi district of Thailand’s restive southern province of Narathiwat, with automatic gunfire and pipe bombs last night (Thursday).

Tourism officials say domestic visitors making up bulk of Songkran tourists

Tourism representatives say most of Thailand’s Songkran tourists are domestic, while most international visitors are from neighbouring countries, where Thailand is a short haul destination. Thaneth Tantipiriyakij from the Phuket Tourist Association says he expects 40% of tourists visiting Phuket this year to be Thai, compared to 30% in 2019.

Pattaya motorcycle taxi rider threatens to kill 2 foreigners over fare dispute

Pattaya Police yesterday arrested a Thai motorcycle taxi rider after he turned into a knife-wielding thug after a row with two foreign passengers over fare prices. According to reports, the taxi driver threatened to kill both foreigners during the altercation.
