A total of 25,100 Thai men, from diverse backgrounds such as monks and those holding Master’s degrees, applied for voluntary enlistment in the Royal Thai Army yesterday, according to deputy army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Sirichan Ngathong.

 

The annual military conscription took a short break during the Songkran Festival and resumed yesterday. The draft is set to continue until Thursday in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Army regions, with 10-20% of the process remaining. Meanwhile, the draft has concluded in the 3rd Army Region.

 

Maj. Gen. Sirichan reported that as of Sunday night, 25,100 young men had applied for voluntary enlistment, revealing some interesting trends in the education levels of the conscripts during the conscription period from April 1-12:

 

• 22 voluntary conscripts held a bachelor’s degree. By applying for enlistment, they waived their right to reduce their time in military service from two years to six months and showed an intention to complete the full two-year service.
• 19 bachelor’s degree holders who went through the draft process drew a red card, which indicated they were conscripted. Instead of seeking to reduce their time from two years to one, they waived the right and volunteered to complete two-year services.

• 23 individuals holding a master’s degree applied for voluntary enlistment.
• 27 monks, who were exempted from military service, asked to go through the draft process. This group included six monks of high rank, one with Level 1 of Dhamma Study, one with Level 2 of Dhamma Study, 16 with Level 3 of Dhamma Study, and three with a higher level of Dhamma Study.
• Other voluntary enlistments came from various occupations.

It is quite hard to get in the Thai army, they test thousands and send thousands home.

A friend's step-son has just been given his marching orders, and he had done a year or two in the "goffers" brigade....

 

Education, fitness, no tattoos, family, a huge list to contend with...????

If you don't want to get shot in the Southern provinces the best way to get around the conscription is to volunteer for the Air Force.  Go though basic and afterwards you have a one year service stint which there are ways to avoid. 

But sign up for the Army?  When my son signed up I told him flat out.  Say no to Army.  Volunteer for the Air Force which isn't going to send you to get shot or blown up in the Southern 3 provinces.

My Thai nephew volunteered the year before last. His job in Japan came to an end because he wasn't able to pass the next level of Japanese language required. He served 12 months at the 23rd Military Circle base which houses a military court. He said he enjoyed it but not enough to enlist as a regular.

The thousands want to get in because regular pay, pension and their parents get taken care of medically....

They 'volunteer' to sign up instead being conscripted to do so. It's their own choice.

My wife's son, who has served in the army for 9 years now and is a Master Sergeant assures me that they do NOT send conscripts down south. Only regular trained soldiers are sent on that duty.

 

He personally does not have to serve down south because he is an artillery specialist and thus far they haven't started using Howitzers down there.

Raises the question 'Why?' - Buddhist monks? Doesn't make sense, unless Thailand was at war, or the 'monks' are 3-month novices.

I guess it beats being unemployed on the streets... but only just.

Many of these people are leaving University with no hope of finding work.

Seems like some of these conscripts and those volunteer enlistment soldiers have much better education than the unelected caretaker ex soldier PM himself. ????

Very confused. This mentions voluntary enlistment in the same breath as conscription.....surely they are not the same?

So ,it him and his mates that wake me up at 5.30 am I am in Lopburi province home to some of the artillery brigades, they practice in the hills just outside Lopburi ,about 25 km, as the crows fly from us, they like to practice in the early morning, sometimes at night, we can hear their guns .

Our joke, they are practicing for the next coup.
