The prosecutor leading the investigation of former President Donald J. Trump and his allies in Georgia said on Monday that she is aiming to announce any indictments by mid-July at the earliest, according to a letter she sent to a top local law enforcement official.

In her letter, Fani T. Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, Ga., said that any charges would come during the court term that runs from July 11 to Sept. 1.

In January, Ms. Willis said that charging decisions in the investigation were “imminent.” But her timetable has been delayed, in part because a number of witnesses have sought to cooperate as the investigation has neared an end.

Collecting more testimony and evidence to make the case airtight it appears.  Investigations like this do take time to get all if the T's crossed and I's dotted. Will be an interesting case as it involves many of Trumps associates as well as he himself.

... and the Atlanta J-C article that the OP NY Times article notes as its source. The AJC not firewalled:

Quote

she asked them to be ready for “heightened security and preparedness” because she predicted her announcement may provoke a significant public reaction.”

Pretty obvious what she's implying here.

And that damn phone call we've heard a thousand times, him and his and the Georgia guys have never contested it.  With AI being all in the news these days I wouldn't be surprised if Team Orange claims it was AI generated.

I think there is a general sense of betrayal among his torch-and-pitchfork rank and file, taking no action to defend them legally:

The charging date was expected to be earlier.

It had been delayed because the DA asked the Court to remove a lawyer representing several of the defendants.

The lawyer had broken two professional codes. Firstly she had not informed some of her clients that the Prosecutors were offering them a cooperation deal ( Prima face obstruction of Justice), secondly the lawyer did not refuse herself from representing clients who were giving evidence against others who were also her clients.

The delay provides those under investigation the opportunity and time to being on board replacement defense attorneys.

The DA is actually being by the book fair to the suspects.

She is of course obliged to be, even though they were dumb enough to sign their names on the evidence of their crimes:
