Police arrested 12 Burmese transnational criminals

The Special Branch Police Division today (Jul 6) arrested 12 illegal laborers from Myanmar in Samut Prakan province . The group established themselves as mafias who were trying to extort money from other Burmese workers in Thailand.

According to the Special Branch Police Division, the 12 Burmese laborers were transnational criminals as they forced other Burmese workers in Thailand to give them protection fees and other assets. The leader of the group was Mr. Wayla, 37, and they had extorted money from other Burmese laborers in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province. Each of their victims would have to pay an annual fee of 800 baht.

Furthermore, the Burmese syndicate issued loans with interest rates of around 20 to 30 percent per month, and if their clients failed to pay, the group would threaten to hurt them or seize their possessions.

The Special Branch Police Division said the 12 Burmese criminals did not have proper work permits and they will be sent to Myanmar later.

The burmese fellow who delivers my suits in Phuket told me he pays between 1000 and 2000B a month to the local fellow that serves and protects.
