TAT launches Keeping Thailand Beautiful project

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Central Office Region 5, organized the Keeping Thailand Beautiful project at Koh Chang sub-district in Trat province yesterday (Jul 5). Its objective is to stimulate Thailand’s tourism industry.

The Deputy Governor of Trat, Mr. Anan Pittayayon, presided over the opening ceremony of this project. Many tourism operators have joined this project.

Mr. Chuchart Oncharoen, the Director of the TAT, Central Office Region 5, says the Keeping Thailand Beautiful project will help relevant agencies conserve many tourist destinations in the country and will also foster the villagers to be proud of their local areas.

In addition, the local people would be a good host, with an aim to attract more tourists in the future.

Maybe a good starting point would be to fine Thais as well as foreigners for littering around the Siam Square and Sukhumvit areas?

Or am I asking too much to be treated fairly?

and stop those ###### buses from belching out black, toxic fumes!!

Maybe these dreamers could start by having a few hundred unemployed generals clean up the State Railway of Thailand railway tracks between Hua Lampong Station and Samsen station. Plastic bags and other assorted garbage line the tracks for miles..

Then attack the filthy black, stinking, open sewers they call khlongs.

Next educate rural Thais not to throw their garbage in the nearest river or khlong. Also a garbage pickup service might be a good start for an entrepreneur.

Tourists on the trains are exposed to miles of open country, some of it beautiful, and much of it either scorched from over burning or littered with the ubiquitous plastic bags.

Good luck T.A.T. :o

"Keeping Thailand Beautiful project" ...ok, try and save what's still relatively beautiful - without paving it over, as most parks in Thailand seem to think making something beautiful entails putting in lots of cement and monuments, while allowing a few trees or a little patch of grass to grow off in a couple of corners.

How about, "Let's Make Thailand Beautiful Again project"

Oh, and has there ever been a concerted campaign here against littering? I always know when there's been an outdoor concert somewhere, when I pass by on the following day - paper and plastic and styrofoam are strewn every square inch. As each day passes by, the wind speads the litter farther afield. Have the site operators demand a high deposit (may Bt. 100k) and not refunding a satang until the grounds are throughly litter-free.

Well as far as the perception of the incoming "quality tourist" is concerned they should either supply them with rose-tinted glasses or find a way to dissuade local people from turning their otherwise pristine environment into a garbage and rubble strewn strewn nightmare.

I'd say it's going to take at least three generations , and the latest "committee" just need to be patient (and collect their salaries of course).
