If you transferred money into Thailand to buy the house, and kept the documents proving that, you should be allowed to transfer the money out again without any problems. Check with your bank, and if it is not too far back, they can probably even dig up the required documents for a small fee... Also check with the bank here and in the UK the best way to transfer to optimise the exchange rate, keeping in mind the onshore/offshore THB forex rate differential that can make a substantial difference on a large amount.

I believe (but am not sure, so check this yourself) that you can legally take out money as a foreigner, even if the money is made here in Thailand. But then you would probably have to show income slips/tax receipts, so it is proven to be "clean" money. I did this in South Africa 11 years ago, they had similar regulations as Thailand, and it was quite easy actually. In the end, showing my passport ended up being enough for their forex staff to allow the transfer out.

If you go the travellers cheque route, I don't see why you have to first buy cash, but perhaps it's just me...
