BANGKOK, June 22 – (TNA) The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has introduced artificial intelligence (AI) software to detect motorcyclists illegally riding on footpaths through CCTV cameras at five spots before expanding the system to cover 100 locations across the capital.

According to the BMA, road accidents occurred to 900 pedestrians every year and it received most complaints about riders travelling on footpaths.

The new AI system will detect violators, read their license plates and automatically report the offences to officials.

A camera on every footpath... I'll wait and see.

There's about a thousand of them on the footpath along beach road.

What about those m/c with no rear number plate.  Can the AI guess the missing number?

That's one road in one location... how about the rest of the city

Or they could have police actually work and stand on the sidewalks and give out tickets.

No need, they have CCTV cameras along most main roads in Bangkok and Pattaya now.

Great idea install more cameras some real have a good payday TIT

Is it still no money to print off images as was the case with speed and red light cameras?

Not all lost someone would have made money on the purchase of the AI units.

The term 'AI' occurs in daily news reports worldwide. It has nothing to do with ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) software utilising video cameras connected to a computer programmed to identify vehicle ownership.

Fines issued by mail to registered owner's addresses are not paid by more than 60% of offenders according to the RTP so adding AI will improve nothing.

It'd need AI or some Maj. Somchai behind the screen to determine if the bike was being ridden on the path vs crossing it to go into businesses or being pushed while the rider is walking, which is legal

A simple numberplate recognition cannot distinguish between bike being ridden vs pushed along the sidewalk

Same with the crosswalk camera that now flash lights and yell at the motorbikes if they're stopped in the crossing zone, they need to identify bikes stopping there vs pedestrian

AI or artificial intelligence has been used in this country for decades. It's best known as the RTP.

More stamping out of part of the charm of LoS - getting hammered then dragged along hitting light poles by a PCX while walking.

Goodbye Thailand we all used to know and love.

one policeman outside the Krungthai bank on south Pattaya Road every market day would help tremendously

You credit them with too much, there is no intelligence in the RTP, artificial or otherwise.

We are on the edge of Bangkok and everything is full with cameras in every direction

but that is easily done by simple systems today...

Great and with the new universal government and private sector digital ID and the digital money it can take the money and reduce the social credit system...

And if it is wrong you can complain at the AI call center.

Anything to avoid putting police personnel on the streets actually stopping crime.

Just another band-aid.

Or the winning lottery number would be better.

Or those Big Bikes that tilt the number plate back under the rear seat to prevent it being read.

I have an image of a large boxing glove on a pole shooting out from the wall and knocking them off their bikes!

How about starting to use conventional intelligence to resolve this problem?

Or have traffic police actively patrolling and stopping the bazillion traffic violations that occur all day every day.  I don't think the local will appreciate it though.

At least they would be busy.  You see a violation everywhere you look pretty much all the time.  Big changes needed before they get to the point where they can address them though.

It's amazing the number of traffic violations you see on the daily with motorcycles.  We wouldn't even manage a trip into town back home.  No number plate, no helmet, four kids on a motorbike, going the wrong way, no lights, speeding everywhere.

It's hardly surprising that bikers go on the footpath, when they're basically allowed to behave like cyclists.

Nothing to do with AI.

It most ;likely is. First it has to recognise that it's a bike and speeding and it needs to read the number plate. That's different to a cop car reading every number plate that passes within particular view window. Whatever system they are using you can be assured it is exactly the same as systems being used in other countries.
