Woman Accidentally Triggers Explosion of Old Fire Extinguisher

On June 28th, 2023, a distressing incident took place in a residential area of Thawi Watthana, Bangkok. A woman inadvertently activated an old fire extinguisher, causing its fire-suppressing chemical contents to explode towards her.

The accident occurred in a two-story townhouse located on Borommaratchachonnani Road, Soi 121.

Rescue officials from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, responding to the scene, discovered a 7kg fire extinguisher, upside down in a cardboard box, in a bedroom filled with white smoke, reported Siam Rath.

Upon closer examination, the fire extinguisher was found to be an old, 7kg model, originally distributed by the Thawi Watthana District Office back in 2009. The blast was likely triggered when the woman turned the extinguisher upside down, causing the valve to loosen and release the chemicals.

The rescuers also discovered another identical fire extinguisher in a nearby house. Fearing another potential accident, the owner allowed the officials to safely release and dispose of its contents.

In light of this incident, residents are urged not to tamper with fire extinguishers without appropriate knowledge, as it risks explosion. Please coordinate with the Thawi Watthana District Office for appropriate disposal of such devices.

So true on so many fronts.

Putting it upside down in a box? It was activated immediately by hard handling.

To be able to do so, the safety pin was out. Used for another function?
