BANGKOK (NNT) - The Pheu Thai Party met with various other parties in an informal meeting over the weekend to discuss solutions to the current political stalemate.

 

Representatives from Bhumjaithai Party, led by party leader Anutin Charnvirakul, met with Pheu Thai deputy leader Phumtham Wechayachai and other party members at Pheu Thai party head office. The Pheu Thai representatives also met with United Thai Nation Party members led by party leader Pirapan Salirathavibhaga and Chartpattanakla Party members led by party leader Suwat Liptapanlop.

 

After the meeting, the Bhumjaithai party leader reiterated in a press conference that his party will not join a Pheu Thai-led government if the Move Forward Party remains in the coalition. He stressed that his party and Move Forward have different ideologies and approaches that goes beyond their stance on amending Section 112 of the Criminal Code.

 

The United Thai Nation leader also confirmed that its political stance remains unchanged, while the Chartpattanakla Party leader said his party will support a government that won’t amend Section 112.

 

Following the meeting, Pheu Thai leader Chonlanan Srikaew said the discussion is within the framework of the eight coalition parties to seek support from MPs and senators for Pheu Thai’s prime ministerial candidate, who will be nominated to parliament for selection on Thursday (27 July). He also denied that the Pheu Thai Party had invited these parties to join its coalition to form a new government.

Bhumjaithai Might Take Turn To Form Majority Govt: Chonlanan

A DESPERATE PHEU THAI LEADER Chonlanan Srikaew said today (July 24) the Bhumjaithai could possibly be given a pivotal role of setting up a majority government now that the Pheu Thai may have failed to find enough support for a partisan candidate for prime minister.

 

Given the task of mustering endorsement from parties and senators for the planned naming of Pheu Thai contestant Srettha Thavisin for prime minister, the second largest elected party might probably come to the conclusion that it has already failed to make it, thus prompting the possibility of leaving the business of forming a majority government to the Bhumjaithai as the third largest one under de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, according to the Pheu Thai leader.

 

The Move Forward, the No.1 largest elected party, has earlier failed to have Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat voted for prime minister in recent joint House/Senate meetings and then passed on the roles of the core of eight coalition partners to the Pheu Thai under de facto party boss/deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Yes Anutin, your ideologies are well known, and publicly stating that they differ from MFP should give them a boost...

Anutin has already said he won't join a minority government. Makes the case for PT to join the rest of the coalition in opposition even stronger. Without BJT, any minority coalition would only have a measly 110 seats or thereabouts. My feeling is, Chonlanan is playing a smart game here. He doesn't want to risk the hellfire wrath of his electorate in sleeping with the enemy, but is playing for time to see how it all pans out, knowing he's got the move into opposition as the killer app, or, who knows, Pita comes storming back with an outright majority of votes for PM. He's already claimed he's got the numbers. But will he make it that far? There's a lot of snipers have him in their crosshairs in No Man's Land.

The man in Dubai is probably the smartest of the bunch.  There's no way he will let PT join with the military.  His coming back if everyone is happy is one thing if the PT becomes the most reviled there is no way back.  Even some of his ex supporters would want to lynch him

That rather depends on how he assesses where the balance of self-interest currently lies. In any case it's not obvious that principle will enter in to his considerations.

Principle may not but power and logistics will.  Thaksin only has power and safety as long as pt or a party of his still has legitimate political being.  Playing with the military right now would diminish that power and his safety.

 

He needs to come into the country as a hero not like a theif in the night

IMO PTP should put forward Srettha, assuming MFP remains un-jettisoned, for a vote. The Senate would not vote him through.

 

After that, I guess PTP + BJT + ~ 165 ish Senators puts them over the top. And they'd have a majority (assumes PP, UTN vote with them) to pass legislation.

 

Then the courts and commissions will wipe MFP out of the history books. And the old Senate will choose the new Senate, nepotism would come first of course.
