The inside story of Bangkok Remand Prison as it prepares to welcome Thaksin

Built in 1890, Bangkok Remand Prison is now poised to receive Thailand’s best-known and most popular convict – Thaksin Shinawatra.

Former prime minister Thaksin, now 74, has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008, avoiding accumulated jail sentences amounting to 10 years behind bars. The Supreme Court has sentenced him in absentia to two years in jail for malfeasance in the government’s corruption-plagued lottery, three years for abuse of power in authorizing loans to the Import-Export Bank of Thailand, and five years for using nominees to disguise his controlling stake in Shin Corporation, which benefited from state contracts and tax cuts under his government.

His scheduled return to the country on August 10 has thus sparked speculation that he may already have secured a deal for VIP treatment behind bars.

Will he get 5-star luxury?

Authorities insist Thaksin will not get preferential treatment and will be treated just like any other inmate under the law. The Bangkok Remand Prison would be his logical place of detention as it accepts male inmates from all parts of Bangkok, except Thon Buri and Min Buri, provided their jail sentences are no longer than 15 years.

If Mr T goes to jail 90% of the politicians should be inside with him

I don't understand, I thought he had been found guilty in his absence, so why will he be held on remand?

Normally if your on remand, and can post bail, and not a flight risk, then you're released on bail.

I don't know how it works here, but in the UK, if your on remand and have money, then you can buy/have almost anything you want, phone, internet, TV, food, etc.

Are the other 10% dead?

Why would he demand worse treatment?

Why would he go to the Remand prison.

He's not on Remand He's been sentenced he's suppose to go direct to Jail.

Is there anybody out there who thinks Thaksin would come back if he would go to jail?

No.

For anybody wondering why he would be going to a remand prison despite having already received a sentence:

"The Bangkok Remand Prison is for prisoners who have cases in the Court of First Instance, but this prison also has prisoners whose cases have already had judgment in the first court and are awaiting the process for the Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court."

You are on remand until you have exhausted all your appeal options.

No.

Of course he isn't going to go to jail.

At worst it will be at some mansion in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

In reality, this is only until a new story can be spun about how he is innocent and a free man.
