THE Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) today (Aug. 16) called for help as Chinese products are now flooding in from every direction with Thai entrepreneurs unable to compete anymore, Matichon newspaper said.

 

Mr. Kriangkrai Thiennukul, FTI’s president, said 20 industrial groups out of a total of 45 have been severely impacted by the heavy flow of Chinese products into Thailand from only five to six groups previously hit.

 

“We can’t fight them anymore. It happened so fast, like a disaster – a flood or forest fire – even though everyone had prepared but there was no time to deal with it, Chinese products are coming in like a typhoon,” he said.

Wearing blinkers will do this, Thailand has been putting all it's eggs in one basket and not wanting to see the big picture - Thing's can only get worse .............LOL

Maybe it’s time for Customs to step in.  They do a pretty good job keeping western products out of Thailand.

And here’s an idea for Bank of Thailand:—let the Baht ease up some more.  No need to defend it, if you want to compete with your neighbor.

Thailand is a a lackey of China the so called 'big brother' and will do anything China want and asks, i don't see anything that will change that.

Something to do with all those free-trade agreements that were signed fort the benefit of Thailand>

Competition will not be tolerated.

So just like the US and Australia then. Who's biggest trade partners are both China.

Cant we just boycot all the trash thats coming from China? Nothing against the Chinese people but the products are for 99% trash. enough of it.

Wait till Chinese EVs destroy the Thai motor industry.

I already do but most consumers don't.  They just want the best bang for their buck regardless of any other considerations. 

 

It is the ordinary man or woman in the street fueling the demand for cheaper Chinese  products.

What Thai motor industry? Assembling cars for Japanese companies eager to get around the 300% import duty doesn't qualify as a motor industry. Where's the research? Where are the improvements? Thai assembled cars are a pale shadow of their originators brands in their own country. Consumers get ripped off both ways, higher prices and lower specs.

One of my biggest frustrations about living in Thailand is that it is very difficult to buy anything that isn't made in China. And most of what comes from China is of very poor quality. I once, in my diplomatic way, asked a Chinese colleague why everything I buy that is made in China is such c*ap, and he was surprised, saying he never has problems with things he buys there.

 

I can only imagine that Thailand only buys in the lowest quality for the lowest price, which suits the country's own standards. If I am able to buy Thai instead of Chinese I have the same problem. Bought a toaster and it lasted less than a month. As a Korean I worked with once said, the standards here are so low.

TBH you can import anything but if people don't buy it then you won't make money.

If Chinese products are selling this is just competition.

Thailand just hasn't focused on manufacturing, so this is coming back to bite them as China is oriented forward making lots of cheap products

Same mantra was playing in the 50's when Japan turned the world on its heels.  There are a lot of good products made in China and many of the brand name products we think of being made elsewhere are being made there.  But yes at junk prices there is a lot of junk available - but it seems to be getting less rather than more (price of good quality hardly more than junk these days).

What has Thailand focused on in it's economy. Lat time I looked Manufacturing was about 50% of the economy implying 8% of the work force. Agriculture was 10% of the economy employing 50% of the workforce.

Good points.  At least Thailand can and will export rice, rubber, durian, etc.

And it's going to get worse. Thailand has applied to join BRICS. When that happens, the flood becomes a tsunami.

Exactly. Thailand lauds the new train for bringing more tourists from China.

 

But that's hardly the only benefit to China. This was the entire point of the silk road ; drive easy access for product shipping into other countries as well as military equipment when needed.

If train tracks could be built across the ocean the entire South China Sea would be covered with them.

From what I read they're selling like hot cakes in China. (What's that? Burning?)

The only way to compete is to make Thai products the highest quality at competitive prices, so that buyers are confident if they 'Buy Thai' it is guaranteed to be the best. People will tend to avoid cheap and cheerful Chinese imports if they are confident they will get quality value for money.

Took a very long time to see this ! Chinese rubbish has flooded the Thai shops for many years now.

Cheap, but very bad quality, so not cheap in the long run as they end up in the bin .
