The GFs nephew had a little shop.

The other day a man comes in pissed and makes a scene.

He is asked to leave.

He hits her Nephew who returns the compliment.

The man is thrown out of the shop.

Later that night the drunk's son enters the shop and shoots the owner dead!

He will know spend a lot of time in the monkey house. Stupid or what?

There's is a party in full swing here in Soi Kautolo with the usual very loud music.

At about 2am an old Falang goes to complain. They shoot him dead! Nice people eh?

After hearing of many such pointless Murders, I have come to the conclusion that Thais think nothing of killing.

I seem to remember reading that Thailand is 3rd on the World list of Gun Crimes Per Capita so please don't post that it's worse in wherever.......

How to Save Face in Thailand

Thailand is a country with a complex cultural fabric and set of codes for appropriate social behavior and to the average western visitor, this can present an interactive environment that is diversely different from what they might be used to at home. Whether you are visiting Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket or even some remote village it's good to know a few cultural polities.

Much like the rest of SE Asia, there is the concept of 'saving face' under which values such as self respect and respect of others in the social hierarchy are paramount. Adhering to these social codes is what allows Thai society to function smoothly and to offer less conflict and episodes of violence than is the norm elsewhere.

Exactly WHAT pray has shooting someone for almost nothing got to do with saving face?

What can you expect when many youngsters nowadays are brought up on a diet of violent TV and video games and internet pornography? Do you remember when we were kids and going to the movies how we would come out of the cinema feeling so good. We never saw blood and gore and guns. Now kids (and immature adults) must feel murderous and oversexed and with easy access to drugs and guns you've got a very volatile mix. In cities such as Pattaya there is probably very little community spirit and law. At the moment decent folk keep a low profile and and don't complain . Maybe in time there will be a better management and better policing but how far does things have to degenerate before the good people say enough is enough and demand peace and quiet and security?

LuckyDog is right - there are too many Thais with way too many guns, and murders is something that is strongly inspired by corrupt police and by TV / Video violence like Tammi says (even thou they try to blur out the weapons on Thai TV)

When I read the first posts from LuckyDog, I didn’t believe that Thailand was no. 3, but some statistics it is.

Just look at the amount of murders - Thailand is ranked very high, and with the amount of Russian tourists coming, well lets face it, Russians are definitely no angles when it comes to murders.

Same, same here in Phuket:

Students charged over roadside beating

RASSADA: Two second-year university students were arrested after allegedly assaulting a man at an accident scene on Soi Phaneang on July 2.

When Phuket City police arrived at the scene, they found the two students, named by police as “Wit”, 22, and “Karine”, 23, both from Pattani province, beating 30-year-old Jaroonsak Khongjit, an employee of Phuket Adventure company.

Pol Capt Atthapol Wannasaengthong of Phuket City Police Station told the Gazette that the incident happened after the students’ motorcycle and Jaroonsak’s motorcycle bumped while they were riding on Soi Phaneang.

The collision caused the student’s motorcycle to crash to the ground. K. Jaroonsak was assaulted when he went to apologize to the students, said Capt Atthapol.

“I asked them why they beat him and they said that they were angry,” he said.

“People at the scene reported that one of them had a gun and used the gun to hit Jaroonsak. When we frisked them we found a homemade gun with bullets,” Capt Atthapol added.

Both students were charged with committing bodily harm and illegal possession of a firearm.

Man surrenders over road rage shootings

PHUKET CITY: After a four-day manhunt, a Patong man wanted in connection with the shooting murder of two youths in front of Kaset Market, the fresh market near Robinson department store, turned himself in to police early yesterday morning.

The suspect, 33-year-old building contractor Sukkasem Charoenrat, has denied the charges.

Police say they have testimonies confirming that Sukkasem was pulling his Honda Phantom chopper out onto Ong Sim Phai Rd around 10 pm July 5 after having a meal with his 10-year-old son at the Jay Nang khao mun gai stall outside the PS Inn.

Witnesses said that as he began to accelerate away from the stall, two youths approached at high speed on another bike and crashed into the chopper, Phuket City Police Duty Officer Lt Theeradet Jiraksa told the Gazette.

The youths approached the man, whose son was slightly injured, and tried to apologize.

Instead of accepting their apologies, Sukkasem allegedly pulled out a pistol and began firing.

Many people eating at street side stalls in the popular dining area ran for cover or fell spread-eagle to the ground.

After firing about seven shots, the man and his son calmly got back on the chopper and rode off.

A restaurant owner who witnessed the incident alerted police.

Officers arrived to find Phuket Technology School student Nuttapong Naweewong, a 17-year-old native of Koh Yao, dead at the scene. A 9mm bullet had entered his left temple and exited from the right.

Witnesses said the other youth, 19-year-old Sarawut Jitlang of Satun, was shot once in the head while trying to flee. He was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital, but died soon after arrival. Sarawut was a crew member for a speedboat ferry service to Koh Phi Phi Don, police said.

Also rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital was bystander Anucha Waree, 18, who was shot in his left arm.

Lt Col Amponwat Sangruang from Phuket City Police said that investigators visited Sukkasem’s home in Patong on Friday, but he was not there.

A 9mm handgun was discovered at the house, police said.

A warrant was issued for Sukkasem’s arrest on Saturday. He turned himself in at Kathu Police Station yesterday at 5:30 am.

Sukkasem has been charged with two counts of murder, attempted murder and carrying a gun in public without a permit, added Col Amponwat.

The case has been sent to Phuket Provincial Court. Sukkasem is being detained at Phuket City Police Station.

Pattaya is a Wild East Town if you ask me.....

A month or so ago, I was walking to my car on 3rd rd when a couple of kids on a motorbike hotly persued by a gang on bikes shot by. And Shot is the operative word here, for the Gang were shooting with pistols at the two kids ahead!.........No Cops around of course.

The point is, Pattaya - where we read about gruesome murders evry week - is just a small seaside town. It is one thing comparing statistics to other countries like South Africa etc, and saying that the murder rate is not as great as there, but, when you think about it, it's absurd that we are talking about a small seaside town like Pattaya. When you consider this, it is quite shocking. Not only do murders take place on a weekly basis in Pattaya, but some of them are horrendously gruesome that in any other seaside town in the world would make national headlines. This is not a criticism, because I do have a deep affection for Pattaya, but lets face facts. The obvious reaction for those of us with an affection for Pattaya is to immediately jump to its defence - and yes there are many attractions - but when it comes to murder, and the type of murder, they seem unprecidented and there is no argument. It is a great pity. I don't know what the answers are except, of course, they lie in social policies to reduce poverty and supplying a professionally trained and uncorrupt police force. That thought alone just about says it all.

Some time ago a "top British cop" was asked to comment on the murder investigations in Thailand, part of his statement was that "if you have a pick up truck and a shovel you were 70% on your way to being able to commit murder without being caught"

Or words to that effect!!!!

Who allows their kids to be "brought up on a diet of violent TV and video games and internet pornography?" What parent allows their kid (for example) to get a tattoo because of peer pressure? The parent with the inability or unwillingness to sit down with their kid and explain why they should not deface their bodies. The same one who takes the path of least resistance and does nothing when suspecting their darling offspring may be having sex underage. In a recent well-publicised case in the UK, the parents of a Harrow (and later Oxford) scholar did nothing about their sons alcohol and drug dependency since he was 14 years old until he murdered the neighbours daughter. What sort of parent misses their siblings 7 year battle with alcohol and drug addiction?

Yes, I can hardly wait for better city management and law enforcement to step up to the plate and deliver the basic parenting skills that the modern mum and dad are bereft of. If the parents can't be bothered, let the city and/or state do the job for them. After all isn't that why you pay taxes? So you can relax and let the 'nanny state' you abhor take care of your kids upbringing? This attitude has turned most of the western worlds youth into the rude, godless, self-centered, criminal-leaning, cynical bunch they are, not 'reality TV, 'Doom' or 'Debbie Does Dallas'. Where has this global social disconnect between generations some from? Call me old-fashioned but this modern school of low-impact, 'no smacking', namby-pamby, 'I am your friend' style of parental discipline has a helluva lot to answer for.

Nanlaew what an excellent post. As a parent I hope I can do a good job with my child. As you said it's up to the parents (which by the way is a job--if you can't take the time to do the job--don't have kids). Parenting starts at day one and carries on FOREVER. The wildness we see in Pattaya with youth is reminiscent of just about the whole modern world and is a reflection on how society and morals have declined. My 2 cents worth.

Its not as expensive as everyone thinks - take out my drinking and I probably live as cheap as I would in Thailand (Bangkok).

Less tax that Thailand.

I am talking about a working expat here - not retiree etc

PS; Interesting item on just on CBS news - even though a lot more sex on TV etc the incidence or teenage sex and pregnancy etc in the USa has dropped significantly in USA - not down to god squadders etc but better education they say

I think the views of the Welsh detectives involved in the Kirsty Jones murder in Chiang Mai pretty much sum it up.

They know who it is, they know its a Thai cop - the Thai's just moved him

Scum to the rotten core those involved.

Here's the story of an incedent that I partially witnessed about four years ago.

A mother with her 1 year old baby walks into a mobile telephone shop. She walks up to the counter, puts the baby down on the counter, and asks the service person (the owner in this case) for something. The owner walks out through the back door to search for it. While the owner is out the back the mother leans over the counter, opens the till & starts helping herself.

The owner walks back in & the mother panics, turns & runs out of the shop with a fist full of Baht. However, she forgot the baby. The mother is standing out side the store, obviously in two minds about what to do. The store owner grabs a knife & puts it to the babies throat. The mexican stand off went on for about two minutes, before the mother relented & walked back into the store.

The police arrive, listen to both sides of the story, & charge both people with the appropriate crimenal offences.

The mind boggles! If that had been a loaded gun combined with the adrenaline rush of the moment. No more baby.

Soundman.

Can anyone afford to live in Singapore anymore, house prices are going through the roof. But then again you're less likely to get shot.

Yes housing is going up - out wioth a guy last night whose rise was from 3400 to 5200 upon renewal

I only pay 2700 for a 2 bedroom plus study in a very very nice area though - brand new.

Food is very cheap here as is transport etc.

Well affordable if you are a working expat but that where the market is aimed at for non-Singaporeans.

I used to live and work in Thailand - I have it on a list of places to live again but not to work unless they give me a hefty hike for the hardship!

Why oh why do farangs still fall for this old chesnut of "saving face" and "buddhist" society crap, a bloke kills a bloke, he is a villain.

The night before Loy Kratong, eighteen months ago, my wife's seventeen year old sister was stabbed to death in her home village.

Reason - none. The guy who did it was drunk and she walked past him without saying anything (like hello).

If it was up to me, I would wipe out hiom and his entire family - as far flung as I could. But he got a slap on the wrist and is now out of jail and back in the village. (But then I am a really nasty sod)
