webfact
Jakarta – Newly elected Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will not be able to attend the ASEAN summit later this week in Jakarta, because his government is yet to take an oath and deliver a policy statement to parliament. The Thai delegation will be led by Sarun Charoensuwan, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The three-day ASEAN Summit and ASEAN-related summits will kick off tomorrow (September 5th) with more than a dozen meetings among the ASEAN leaders and their dialogue partners. Sarun will participate in all the sessions, including the foreign ministerial and joint coordinating council’s meetings ahead of the leaders’ meeting. Sarun will also participate in the opening of the ASEAN-Indo Pacific Forum (AIPF), along with the other ASEAN leaders. The AIPF is the flagship event of the ASEAN summit, which serves as a platform on which to exchange views and strategies for the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). He will also attend several ASEAN-plus summits with China, Japan, South Korea, the US, Canada, Australia, India and ASEAN Plus Three.
