TRANSPORT Minister Suriya Jungrungruangkit said this afternoon (Sep. 5) the Pheu Thai campaign pledge to cap Bangkok electric train fares at 20 baht a trip is not being written in the coalition government’s policy statement to be delivered to Parliament but it could possibly be implemented in two years’ time, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TVsaid.

 

“Pheu Thai Party’s policy on a flat fare of 20 baht per Bangkok train trip is not urgent right now. Although they want to introduce it, there are other more important policies to spend money on first.

 

“In probably not more than two years we would be able to definitely push this policy,” he said. Asked whether the ministry will be continuing large investment projects particularly the huge land bridge scheme linking the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea, Suriya replied that the ministry would be continuing with this project to create a key transport link.

Another broken pledge... 

Another day, another vote buyer bites the dust.

Bangkok is one of the only cities in the world where taking a taxi is often cheaper than taking the metro. Bangkok's public transportation network is horrible compared to most other big cities. Try going from Bang Na to the CBD's or airports.

This was a non-starter from the get-go.

 

Srettha started walking this back shortly after gaining the PM slot.

 

As recently as five days ago he was: asking for more time to study this, and only applying it to low-income individuals only.

 

 

I think the looming debt relief for the BMA, who owe the BTSC 11.75 BILLION baht and which the government will have to pay, was another nail in this 20 baht train fee coffin.

Looking at this in 2years is about right and I will bet anyone that they will strongly be pushing this .

 

As part of their platform in the next election.

 

The only question is how do they pay for it and is BTS at ,20 baht comparable to the fact that if a person takes a bus from mor chit to on nut.

Sure, and reforming the military, increasing minimum wage, guaranteeing graduates 25k pm. Lowering energy costs might go through as a populist measure I guess.

Call me a cynic, but I believe PT got the one and only thing they really cared about -- getting Thaksin back into Thailand, and de facto in charge of the government by proxy.

 

Once that was accomplished, all the campaign puffery for ordinary Thais becomes irrelevant (for PT).
