Locals petition to halt contentious 200-billion-baht water project in Thailand

The Chiang Mai Administrative Court received a petition yesterday from locals seeking the cancellation of a contentious 200-billion-baht water diversion venture. This project, designed to bolster the water supply to the Bhumibol dam in Tak, now teeters on the precipice of uncertainty due to the residents’ opposition.

The ambitious project details the construction of a diversion barrage, an access road to the barrage, a reservoir, a water pump station, and a water supply tunnel. However, these developments carry a substantial risk of disrupting the local environment.

The primary objective of the project was to ensure a steady flow of water to the Bhumibol dam, a critical water source for both agricultural activities and hydroelectric power production.

Looks really pretty, unfortunately artists impressions can be deceiving.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to cancel this gorgeous project and look at boring old grass, trees and water. I'm guessing it is carbon neutral and can easily flood that bit with all the grass, tress and stuff.

the project could potentially affect 29 families spread across 36 villages,

Not many in each village🤔

Water security is vastly more important than almost anything else for Thailands future. This will go ahead despite the objections

Well, the complete article states, is going ahead in "blatant defiance of legal regulations" so I would not be too quick to condemn the local people.

Such a pity the journalist couldn't be bothered to state, or summarize, the regulations referred to though.

Less than 25% of the amount would be better spent educating the Population in correct Water usage,

The usage of Water by many in this Country is nothing short of appalling, with massive amounts of wastage

The OP picture appears to be the Bhumiphol Dam in Tak.

The planned project is to build a barrange to divert more water to this reservoir which is on the Ping River. The Chao Phaya river feeds the Ping si is the barrage to be on the Chao Phaya? 🤔
