Submarine Deal Won’t Be Scrapped At Expense Of Other Agreements: Suthin

DEFENCE MINISTER SUTHIN Khlangsang said today (Oct.24) bilateral cooperation and relationship between Thailand and China would be undesirably affected as a whole if a troublesome Chinese-built submarine deal was scrapped.

Suthin said China has already agreed to provide cooperation and assistance to Thailand during a recent visit to that country by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and advised that the 12.4 billion baht submarine purchase deal not be entirely cancelled at the expense of other bilateral agreements.

Former prime minister-cum-defence minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had earlier commented that the submarine purchase contract could have been completely scrapped only if a German-made engine earlier specified for use with the Chinese submarine was unavailable.

As someone pointed out the Gulf of Siam/Thailand is only 85 metres deep AT MOST (average 45 metre) so  a submarine here would be pointless. Send it over to the Adaman Sea so they can torpedo refugee boats maybe?

Xi has spoken, cancel at your peril.

Folks we can't let this sub get away from us, lets dig this turd out of the cat pan and put it back on the stove..

Confused; wasn't the word that they get a frigate instead? Also, if they love China as much as they do, why don't they get a submarine with an engine Made in China?

  • Popular Post

That is either a dodgy photoshop, or one humungeous gurt submarine!

They will end up with a submarine, which will spend it's life tied to a jetty.

There is also the massive cost that Thailand has allotted to all the already acquired Back-Up for the Sub

Things such as Personnel Training, Special Dock Etc Etc

Somewhere in the region of 13 Billion Baht ( I think )

The Minister is posturing for the public who are clamoring for cancellation.

I think China has Thailand over a barrel now.

Substituting a Frigate now will be costly.

Not to mention the investments the RTN has already made in infrastructure to support submarine operations.

What an embarassement.

Somebody should pay, oh right, the taxpayers.

A confident Thai government would basically walk away from the deal: China at fault for not supplying appropriate equipment as provided for in the contract. Either cough up or we go elsewhere to meet our (psychological) needs.

The sub will provide backhanders and make the Chinese happy.  What more does it need to do?

And of course, the Admirals will be able to gaze upon it's awesome sleek shape as they park their new Mercedes, before wandering off to play a round of golf on the newly refurbished course behind their submarine force HQ!

It's all win win.

In the news today: submarine deal scrapped, they buy a frigate instead.

A frigate doesn't need an engine, you can always equip it with sails.

Who will Captain this Sub? The British Subs. Captain Exam is allegedly the hardest Exam in the world, if you fail you are never allowed to serve on a Sub again. Good luck with that Captain Somchai.

Poor Old Gen Prawit, he will never be able to see/fit inside. :giggle:

I think the backhanders have already been paid, Now they might be asked to hand them back if its cancelled, so hence no cancelation.

Don't forget that the 10,000 Baht wallet has to be paid for.  Cancelling he sub deal might help.

Yes. Andaman Sea operation has been planned. Just waiting for the new canal across the Isthmus of Kra to open......😋

The same as their Aircraft Carrier which is rotting away at some pier in Thailand.   What a waste and the Thai Government knows it but has sucummed to arm twisting from the Chinese.

Ah, but the British Submarine Captains course/exam does not begin with "Do you know who I am?"

Not torpedo them, but they could tow them out to sea and leave them with no power, food, or water as has been alleged that the Thai Navy has done before.

Just sorting out how the tea money will be apportioned.

Right location, wrong mission.

Andaman Sea is indeed their intended home area of operations (base facilities included in the cross-isthmus plan)......they will spend zero time in the Gulf except during "peace".

Purpose being to assist China in challenging Indian maritime authority in the Indian Ocean and blocking/choking of Malacca Straits.......when the time comes

They could probably get a crane to lower him though the torpedo loading hatch. They would have to offload a fair amount of ballast first though.

Tristian Jones built a submarine in Phuket years ago maybe the government can find it and sell the Chinese sub to investors interested in opening a floating hotel or night club or?
