Paetongtarn on course to becoming third Shinawatra to lead Thailand

Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s rise to the helm of the ruling Pheu Thai Party is being seen as preparation for her to become prime minister – either if the top job is vacated prematurely, or after the next election.

This highlights her family’s continuing influence in Pheu Thai and Thai politics more than two decades after her father Thaksin made his political debut as leader of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party, say many observers.

“It’s now time for the boss’s daughter to lead the party” is how many long-time observers of Thai politics see it.

Speaks volumes about the local mentality! 🤪 The army or the Shins? 🙄

You will get what you voted for .. Or in this place absolutely nothing like it at all 🤔

Let's look when she will flee to Dubai like the others. It seems to be a family tradition.

Next election? If the people get their way (you know, through a fair vote like before), ALL of this lot will be down the road. Have defended the Shins in the past, but they’re as bad and corrupt as the army.

I very much doubt Pheu Thai will get voted in next time, given their track record of betraying the electorate.  The latest betrayal is deferring paying the 10,000 vote buying bribe until September next year (at the earliest), and not paying it to all Thai adults as promised.

Thai democracy makes Hun Sen and Xi Jinping proud...

This might partially explain why her father isn't in prison.

Srettha needs to be careful crossing the road.

Barely two months in and the globe-trotting PM seems to be on the hot seat.

Not much difference to a certain low life politician in America who wants a comeback while fighting multiple court cases. Thaksin is still popular because, rather cleverly, he was the only politician that improved the lot of the poor. I doubt that family members resting in his shade will have his tactical genius, his sister didn't have any success. Paetongtarn is just a temporary useful tool with no power of her own and probably knows it, without daddy she is nothing.

Far far better than yet another military coup where they simply steal the entire country.

Makes you feel sorry for the Country.

Part of the problem is that they had no idea how much money was available nor how much debt has to be repaid and when, as the previous government made it classified and secret.

As for not paying every Thai over 16, why would you give it to a multi billionaire who probably makes more than that per day in interest alone, compared to a jobless Thai with a family to support .

What should happen is that every Thai taxpayer earning over, for example, 100,000 per month should be excluded and their share either put back in the pot and shared with non tax payers, or put back in the pot so that less money needs to be borrowed.

I'll second that, brilliant idea

Or any of their predecessors - succession of oligarchical cabals.

i wonder if or when auntie is coming back.

Apart from bringing some reminiscent tears of joy to die hard red shirt devotees it is more likely that the majority of Thai will await any indication of further, greater populist cash payouts as the  antidote to the social cultural infection of systemic corruption that survives the placebo of false democratic "elections".

If not forthcoming then to accept the adamant promises that next time electoral outcomes will be different .

No surprise  if it is not. No different to most established "democratic" elections that are a simple choice between liar/thieves  or thieves/liars .

Well, he was just named on Time Magazine's  2023 '100 List' in the 'Leaders' category.  Nice honor.

i dont think this is new news... is it? i think it was at least a month ago.

She would have to win an election first, and that doesn't look likely.

MFP is very likely to crush all of the parties during the next election cycle. It is high time Tony and his family go away. All they did was enrich and empower themselves, why would we want more of this?

Only way this will happen is if "Big T" has made a deal with the current leaders.

Which looks like it has happened.

Every Thai under thirty that I know intends to vote for MFP next time. Time is on Pita's side.
