Senator Upakit Pachariyangkun was formally indicted today on narcotics trafficking, money laundering and association with a transnational criminal organisation charges.

 

The senator has denied all the charges and applied for bail, by placing five million baht in cash as a surety. The court is yet to decide whether to grant bail.

 

Prayut Petchkun, spokesman for the Office of the Attorney-General, said that Senator Upakit’s case will be separately tried from the case of his Burmese business associate, Tun Min Latt, who was arrested in Thailand in August last year and who is currently on trial on similar charges. Also arrested was Dean Young Gultula, Upakit’s son-in-law.

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai police have seized what is being called a record haul of methamphetamine tablets in the western province of Kanchanaburi, close to the Myanmar border.

 

Officers found an estimated 50 million tablets hidden in sacks in a six-wheeler truck they stopped at a joint police-military checkpoint on Tuesday. The occupants of the truck – a man and a woman – were arrested.

 

The quantity of methamphetamine tablets seized is a record for Thailand, Jeremy Douglas, the Southeast Asia regional representative for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, said Wednesday. The region’s biggest known seizure took place in neighboring Laos in October 2021, when a consignment of 55 million pills was discovered.

You're not talking about some Mom and Pop kitchen operation. There must be some major production facilities producing these tablets.

If Mynamar is a major production point, it would seem the military junta government shouldn't have much difficulty identifying and suppressing such production being trafficking to ASEAN countries where the street value can be 10 times higher in Bangkok. Yet what we hear is the efforts of Thailand and China to suppress meth distribution. What is Mynamar doing? Self funding?
