ballpoint
Google Play Store is linked to the location set in your Google account, not to wherever you happen to be, or a VPN says you are. 5davidhen1
I listen to BBC radio 2 on i-player (Sounds) here in Thailand, but have never succeeded with television, always getting the same message as you --- "out of region, or copyright rules etc." I have tried free VPN but I don't fully understand the concept and I'm not inclined to pay for something which I would rarely use anyway. I'm quite happy listening to music.
ballpoint
One way to get the iPlayer app without using the play store is to download the apk to your tablet and open it in your file browser - it will then install on your device. There are more detailed instructions in the link. Download BBC iPlayer latest 5.4.1.3... Android APK (apkpure.com)
Crossy
Yeah @ballpoint, I was going to point at APKpure too.
Crossy
Also note, that a free VPN won't cut it for the BBC etc. they are very good at detecting VPNs and you need a service which can be agile. I use Ivacy, they have a decent solution for the BBC etc. but sometimes I get the "out of region" error, support (in Singapore) are pretty good at sorting the issue.
