Israel has insisted the assassination of a Hamas leader in Beirut was not an attack on Lebanon, as its enemies warned of "punishment" for his death.

An Israeli spokesman said Saleh al-Arouri had died in a "surgical strike against the Hamas leadership".

Hamas condemned the death, while its ally Hezbollah said it was an assault on Lebanese sovereignty.

Lebanon's prime minister, meanwhile, accused Israel of trying "to drag Lebanon into... confrontation".

Lebanese media report that Arouri, a deputy political leader of Hamas, was killed in a drone strike in southern Beirut along with six others - two Hamas military commanders and four other members.

He was a key figure in the Qassam Brigades, Hamas's armed wing, and a close ally of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader. He had been in Lebanon acting as a connection between his group and Hezbollah.

 

Israeli spokesman Mark Regev stopped short of confirming Israel had carried out the assassination, a standard position for Israeli officials, but he told MSNBC: "Whoever did it, it must be clear that this was not an attack on the Lebanese state.

"It was not an attack even on Hezbollah, the terrorist organisation.

"Whoever did this did a surgical strike against the Hamas leadership. Whoever did this has a gripe with Hamas. That is very clear."

Arouri, 57, is the most senior Hamas figure to be killed since Israel went to war with the group after its 7 October attack.

On that day, waves of Hamas gunmen invaded Israel and attacked communities around the border, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 240 to Gaza as hostages.

Israel launched a military offensive in response, with the declared aim of destroying Hamas.

 

Since then, more than 22,000 Palestinians - mostly women and children - have been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.

Hezbollah has fired scores of rockets into Israel and fought several skirmishes with Israeli forces during the Gaza war.

Lebanon's state news agency said Arouri had been killed by an Israeli drone attack on a Hamas office in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh.

No, that would be you spewing cliches.

 

Tell me which countries see Hamas (or specifically, al Arouri) as 'freedom fighters', and then have a look at the list of countries designating both as terrorist. What does that tell you?

 

There is no deliberate attempt by Israel to kill civilians. If there was one casualty lists would be way higher. Think about it this was - Hamas managed to kill over 1000 Israelis in a single day, Israel's 'horrible' response is at about 200 or so casualties per day. Considering Israel's means, it would not have an issue overtaking Hamas's 'score'. What does that tell you?

 

As for 'overwhelming majority' nonsense claims - there are well over a billion Muslims around, so by your logic.....

The aphorism "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" was coined in 1976 to describe Nelson Mandela - among many others - during their fight against Apartheid South Africa.

It applies equally well today when used to define those fighting Apartheid Israel in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Regime change is the only hope for that benighted country. The alternative will surely be to provoke their goofy ally the USA into igniting a regional conflagration with worldwide repercussions.

Establishing an Israeli government that would live within their internationally recognized 1967 borders and stop killing and bombing their neighbours to steal yet more land is a reasonable objective to fight for that shouldn't be equated with terrorism.

That fond hope vanished with the Gaza Massacre that is creating an unprecedented amount of global hostility.

It brings to mind Meyer Lansky's famous lament... "When you're a Jew the whole world is against you."

Two different situations to be sure, but the same knee-jerk reaction to both.

Guess you missed out the gruesome details of the 7/10 attack. Or maybe you think mass rapes are a form of fighting for freedom.

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving case.

 

Also, a friend of mine has sent me a clip which purportedly shows Palestinians carrying a dead man, supposedly killed by the IDF, on a stretcher to his burial, when an air raid siren goes off, so they drop the stretcher to the ground and run off seeking shelter – – and lo and behold, a miracle happens, the "dead man" gets up from the stretcher and also runs for cover.

 

Hamas up to its old tricks again, and when I see protesters in the UK holding up flags which say "Free Palestine" I would love to add on the end of that, "from Hamas", because that's the reality of it, and I can only hope that more Hamas terrorists are wiped from the face of this earth.
