Identified only by his first name on Wednesday, 36-year-old Mr Likhit made his way to Bangkok. In short, to plead for help and justice. The blind man was tricked into signing away his land inheritance by his aunt and her husband. Previously, the unemployed agricultural labourer had sought a loan after his employer disappeared overnight.

Blind man’s heartbreaking betrayal as his Aunt swindles his land for a loan. In a week of uplifting financial disability support hikes, Mr Likhit’s tale speaks of the darker side of human nature.

 

Blind and desperate, he sought a loan, only to unknowingly sign away his 6 rai of land to his aunt. Thailand’s cruel loan contracts are exposed, highlighting the vulnerability of disabled people. Authorities to probe this disturbing story from northeastern Thailand.

In a week when news of substantial and generous new provisions for the disabled emerged, a blind man travelled to Bangkok with a darker message. 36-year-old Mr Likhit from Nakhon Ratchasima broke down as he told reporters how his own aunt, his deceased mother’s younger sister, had cheated him out of 6 rai of land after he asked for a loan of ฿20,000 when his contract labour employer absconded without paying his wages. He thought he had signed up for a loan at an extortionate rate. He learned later that he had signed over his land under Thailand’s cruel and archaic informal loan contracts.

In a heart-wrenching press conference that unfolded on January 10, 2024, human greed and cynicism were laid bare.

It took place in Bangkok after a brave blind man travelled through the night to have his voice heard. Given that he is blind, his journey took a lot of effort coming from Thailand’s rural heartland. He cried at times during an emotional interaction with the press and media.

it is almost daily now i read wonderful stories of tight thai family units showing us westeners how it's done. after all i have been told so many times that they do it better.

You cannot get much lower than that,the evil aunt , on another note, the increase

in benefits for disabled people does not seem enough to live off, if he was looking

Visually impaired man accuses relatives of deceit over 20,000 baht loan in Thailand

A 36 year old visually impaired man, known as Likhit, accused his relatives of tricking him into signing off his land rights, under the misconception that he was signing a loan agreement. The incident took place today, at 12pm.

 

Likhit explained that he once borrowed 20,000 baht from his relatives, with a 10% interest rate, for which he agreed to pay 2,000 baht per month. He believed he was signing a loan agreement. However, he later found out that he had unknowingly signed off his six acres of land in Wang Nam Khiao, a valuable piece of real estate.

 

Likhit, who has been blind for the past 12 years, said he was unaware of the land transfer. He stressed that he never intended to sign off his inherited land, which he received from his late mother.

One day, his relatives informed him that they would seize the land due to his failure to pay the interest. Although Likhit admitted that he hadn’t paid them, he was shocked when they threatened to evacuate everyone living on the land, planning to utilise it for sugarcane cultivation. Before this, Likhit had donated a part of the land for the construction of a water tank for the villagers’ use.

How tragic. There are some really rotten and revolting human beings aren't there? 

I'm sure the 10% monthly interest fee mentioned in the article is illegal. 5% is the maximum allowed under law.

I sincerely hope he has some relatives or friends he can rely on for his life from now on will not be easy with an aunt like that living nearby.

Calling the aunt a bitch is an insult to a female dog.The aunt is definitely the lowest of the low,you can pick your friends, you can't pick your relatives,with a bit of luck karma will befall her

It is about time to start calling out these perpetrators by name, the fact that they can't be named in the media and on these forums is in and of itself a crime. They need to be shamed non-stop, to no end. Mud on their face, egg on their face, shame is a very powerful tool here.
