A new cold front is expected to grip the northern region of the country, bringing thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail, warns the Meteorological Department of Thailand today. The temperature will drop by 3 degrees Celsius starting today. The high-pressure system, or cold air mass, is currently covering the northeastern region and the South China Sea.

The department advises residents in the affected areas to take care of their health due to the changing weather conditions and to exercise caution when travelling in foggy areas. The northeastern monsoon, which is covering the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region, is gradually weakening.

Though this is causing the rainfall to decrease in the lower southern region, isolated thunderstorms are still expected. From tomorrow, January 12 to January 16, another moderate cold air mass from China will cover the northeastern region of Thailand and the South China Sea, while the westerly wind from Myanmar will move across the northern region of Thailand, reported KhaoSod.

These conditions are likely to bring thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible hail in the initial stages, followed by a temperature drop of 1 to 3 degrees Celsius in the northern and northeastern regions. A slight temperature decrease is also expected in the central and eastern regions. During this period, the northern region of Thailand will experience moderate to high levels of dust and smog due to weakening winds and poor air ventilation.
