Under consideration - Marriage extension

Recommended Posts

Once I submit my marriage extension application, can I travel outside of Thailand while under consideration and within the validity of my multiple re-entry permit which expires on April 11th, I will submit my application on 12th March so if accepted, I have 30 days before my re-entry permit expires and would like to travel for work.

Depends if your IO do home visits or not, if so I'd stay put.

I believe once you apply for the extension, you will need a new re entry permit, the existing one is not valid.

Sort with the office about home visit, and yes you are allowed to go during under consideration period, as I have done it last year.

Thanks for your feedback. I always get a new re-entry permit on the day I get my new extension stamp.

I had to get a new single re entry for the under consideration period, my existing multi re entry was not valid,

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it is easier just to stay here and go after I have the new extension.

It was just an extra 1000 baht, got the single re entry the same day as applied for the extension.

I was told that the new re entry was needed because the under consideration period can be past the expiry date of current extension.

My under consideration date was 2 weeks past expiry of the existing extension, so new single re entry was to that new date.

IO at airport thought it funny to stamp me in for only 48 hours.

In Korat immigration, they would not give me a re-entry permit while under consideration.

Why dont you simply phone them and ask ? That way you get it from the horses mouth.

Id  have zero faith in that having  just asked them two questions and a  day later being told the opposite, I went physically to immigration as  well not even phoned them to be sure, they still changed their answer the next day.

I've traveled out of the country several times during under consideration periods. Just make sure you have a re-entry permit that covers it. Some IO's will allow you to submit the application for the new extension up to 45 days before your current extension expires. If you could do that, it might give you some extra time to make travel plans. Check with your IO.
Also, I've found that no matter when I submit my docs, the under consideration period is always 30 days from the date of expiration of the current extension. That date seems to be set in stone for the IO and it is very hard to get them to change it.

The under consideration stamp date invalidates previous extension and re entry permit. I travelled during this period in dec23 and got a single entry stamp as advised by IO. Once the extension for one year is stamped you can get a multi entry. The only issue with leaving the country during this period is to ensure you can be at immigration office on the date shown on your under consideration stamp. You’ll have problems if you don’t and may end up applying all over again if you’re not present on the day.

When we applied for a Marriage extension a few months ago, my wife was told that there would be no home visits for ongoing marriage extensions in Chiang Mai.  For us, this turned out to be true; we were never contacted to do a home visit.

I only had for the initial application and nothing last year even though I had let it lapse as I was in Europe the tail end of covid so started the process again so really this is my first extension on last year's new submission.

I have postponed my trip I will leave when everything is final.

  • 3 weeks later...

I went along to submit my marriage extension application last Friday at Chaeng Wattana. Whilst I was there, I asked 2 separate immigration officers if I can travel during the under-consideration period as my current extension of stay and multiple re-entry permit expire on 11th April and that's the day I collect my new extension, they both confirmed that as long as I'm back before 11th April then I can travel but when I reenter I will only be given a stamp on stay based up to 11th April so when I return on 5th April they will give me 6 day stamp date. Applying early so that the under consideration is within your current extension validity seems to allow you to travel with a valid re-entry permit.
