The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has been rocked by the sudden resignation of its leader, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, following charges of historical sexual offences. Alongside Sir Jeffrey, a 57-year-old woman has also been charged with aiding and abetting in connection with the alleged offences.

Both individuals were arrested on Thursday morning by detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and were subsequently charged later that night. They are scheduled to appear in court next month to face the allegations.

In response to the charges, the DUP released a statement confirming Sir Jeffrey's resignation as party leader, effective immediately. The Party Chairman also announced that Sir Gavin Robinson MP has been appointed as the Interim Party Leader in accordance with party rules. Additionally, Sir Jeffrey has been suspended from party membership pending the outcome of the judicial process.

While the police did not disclose the identities of the individuals charged, they confirmed that a 61-year-old man has been charged with "non-recent sexual offences," with a 57-year-old woman charged with aiding and abetting additional offences. Both are set to appear before Newry Magistrates' Court in April.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, who assumed leadership of the DUP in 2021, is the longest-serving MP in Northern Ireland, first elected to Parliament in 1997. He recently played a pivotal role in steering his party back into government in Northern Ireland after a two-year boycott of the Stormont institutions over objections to the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Sir Jeffrey's political career has been marked by his transition from the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) to the DUP in 2003, citing opposition to the Good Friday Agreement and the leadership of David Trimble. His contributions to politics were recognized with a knighthood in 2016 for his dedicated service.

As the DUP navigates this turbulent period, the sudden departure of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has sent shockwaves through Northern Irish politics, leaving many to reflect on the implications for both the party and the broader political landscape.
