The Myanmar government has requested permission from the Thai government for its aircraft to land at an airport in Tak province to pick up its senior military officers, who escaped from Myawaddy, which was seized by the opposition last night.

Myawaddy, which was the largest government-controlled military camp in Myanmar, is located across the border from Mae Sot district in Thailand.

The request for landing permission, tentatively scheduled from April 7 to 9, was made through the Thai Foreign Ministry.

If granted, 617 Myanmar nationals, including 67 military officers, 410 non-commissioned officers and 81 family members, will board the aircraft back to the capital.

No! Just NO! This should not be granted permission. Lest Thailand been seen accused of aiding and abetting Myanmar in against it's citizens. If these military officers (and family) crossed illegally into Thailand, they should either be arrested and detained on suspicion of war crimes, or simply forced back across the border into their own country (in the same way as ordinary Myanmar civilians are normally repatriated).

Intern them.

They are a defeated army which has fled across the border.

If they are allowed to fly out then they will go back to fighting.

And given that they are Officers and Senior NCOs they probably have good reasons for not falling into rebel hands. Some very nasty people likely!

I suppose the question has to be asked... does Thailand fight or stand for democracy?

Although I'd love to see the Myanmar junta overthrown. Too much persecution continues within their country and yet no western country wants to get involved.

No money in it for the West?

Thailand stands for dithering in the middle of every international problem - looking left & right and up & down simultaneously.

I hope that I am wrong, but I suspect that Myanmar faces a choice between dictatorship and anarchy.  Either way, Thailand can expect a flood of refugees coming across the border.

So permission was granted, of course it was, we know who this military government supports.

Allowing them to land isn't the same as (1) allowing them to stay, or (2) deciding what to do with them whilst in Thailand (eg intern, refugee camp, hand over to international authorities ... ).

I just read on Al Jazzera that Russia supports Myanmar.

Hmmmm and who's letting all these Ruskies into Thailand.

Somethings gotta give soon methinks. It (Myanmar) has been heating up for a few years and as the opposition gets more powerful the military are becoming worried.

Rightfully so... they could be in for a lot of hurt. (In someways justifiably so).

Oh I think I know what will happen and it won't be any of the above.

The question is did they escape or did they desert.

I'd stay out of the whole mess.  My inclination is to side with the rebels, but no doubt they'll just turn out to be another crew of thieves.

Myanmar military faces humiliating rout on Thai border

BANGKOK -- Myanmar civil servants and officials of the military regime began evacuating the eastern town of Myawaddy on the Thai-Myanmar border on Sunday night in one of the most significant setbacks for the regime since its takeover on Feb. 1, 2021.

More than 600 military personnel including about 140 family members have surrendered to forces led by the Karen National Union since the KNU's armed wing and People's Defense Forces in recent weeks increased its attacks on military bases near Myawaddy. Photos posted on social media over the weekend showed KNU and PDF fighters accessing vast stores of light weapons and ammunition in the abandoned bases.

The PDF is the armed wing of the National Unity Government -- the parallel government led by ousted political leaders elected democratically before the military takeover.

Other images posted on Sunday evening showed cars loaded with passengers and baggage moving across a key bridge leading from Myawaddy to the adjacent Thai border town of Mae Sot. Later on Sunday night, a charter plane belonging to state-owned Myanmar National Airlines was pictured on the runway at Mae Sot's airport.

Thai condo market dominated by Chinese and Russian investors

Chinese investors led the way, acquiring 6,614 units, approximately 46% of the total sales, amounting to 34.1 billion baht. Russian buyers followed, purchasing 1,260 units. Myanmar and the United States buyers trailed in the third and fourth positions, respectively.

Interestingly, the highest average price per unit, at 6.6 million baht, was paid by buyers from Myanmar. The majority of these sales, about 41%, were recorded in Chon Buri, known for the resort city of Pattaya and numerous industrial estates.

From what I have read in the BKK Post, they escaped, but they also deserted and abandoned their own troops. If it were up to me, I would have never allowed the generals, officers and SNCOs to enter the country in the first place.

The family members, yes, but they should be treated as the ordinary citizens are and stuck in a refugee camp for years.

maybe not collapse, all depends on the "non" elected PM... if and big if he has cojones he would say no, just tell them to not bring/involve Thailand into their dictatorship actions

if they bring some pills for the thai generals in exchange, a plane full will do...

Thailand should get involved into/with Myanmar internal affairs/domestic politics (policies) military wars killing thousands of innocent people, liberate all imprisoned political democratic opponents including  Aung San Suu Kyi,  just say no avail, move on

The senior officers will have the $$$ to be able to stay. Of that I'm quite sure.

Money speaks in this part of the world.

I'd love to see them all sent to the Hague on suspicion of war crimes.

An earlier example of interference in internal affairs was in 1979 when Vietnam invaded Cambodia to depose the Khmer Rouge. China then attacked Vietnam, but were repulsed.

They should be arrested, held and sent back for trial once a new government has been formed in Myanmar.

Fat chance of that happening though.

Now that's crazy!

The Myanmar Junta government is going down!

Hopefully the next government realizes the complicity that the Thailand's Junta led government has had and still has with the barbaric regime of Myanmar.

Thailand is a total farce when it comes to anything resembling a democracy.

Thailand should have denied permission and handed these Tatmadaw thugs over to the UN or the INCJ.

But....Thailand just can't seem to do the Right Thing when it comes to Democracy.

Didn't Thaksin recently go see Hun Sen ?

There is every possibility that some of these " Senior Military " people will be wanted by the ICC for War Crimes.

Does Thailand wish to be seen aiding these monsters ?

It has also been reported that the flights were to also carry out " Important Documentation "
