Bangkok Revamps Sidewalk Standards for Better Pedestrian Access

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has rolled out new footpath standards aimed at improving the pedestrian experience. To achieve this, the BMA plans to expand the city's footpath network by adding 16 new routes.

Each sidewalk will be designed uniquely, in line with its neighborhood's specific identity, and will be robust enough to endure usual wear and tear.

City Hall spokesperson, Ekwaranyu Amrapal, and Pathumwan District chief inspected some of these sidewalks on Ratchadamri and Phloen Chit Roads, both of which are part of the initial implementation of the new standards. They also checked the new designs of drainage covers, which will reflect the local identity of each area.

The architectural layout of the sidewalks will be with a goal of ensuring a seamless interaction between the entrances and exits of adjacent buildings and the sidewalks. This step will guarantee easier and safer access for pedestrians.

In the first phase of this project, 1,000 kilometers of footpaths will be renovated using three approaches: creation of entirely new sidewalks, urgent repairs of damaged spots, and the introduction of area-specific innovations.

As of now, 16 routes are being remodeled according to these new standards, including Ratchadamri, Phloen Chit, and Udomsuk Roads.

Stop using interlocking pavers....they look great then a concrete truck drives over them, or a tree in an inset grows, and the things are a terrible mess. Use large heavy pavers instead. Also kick off all these awful businesses infesting the sidewalks that make you walk in the road. Can you imagine being disabled and trying to navigate these awful footpaths, dodging speeding motor bikes and noodle sellers, and negotiating the broken and displaced  paving stones?

Until the sub grade collapses, or some ass drive a 10ton truck over it

This is Asia... the only reason for sidewalks is to have a parking spot for motorcycles

It’s called a side “walk” but the motorcycles will probably not agree with that nomenclature

Yep the street venders and motorcyclists are going to luv it.

Well, they will do it at the wrong time of year, and cut corners on the quality/quantity of sand, cement and labour.

It'll be dangerously broken within a year.

Always good to see improvements. Id like to see some type of skywalk down Soi 4 so that if you strike out in your efforts or are too Cheap Charlie for Nana and its 4am, you can zip down the Soi for some African action on the corner of Soi 6 without getting molested by Ladyboys in front of 7-11. Also level out the sidewalk please in front of the Greenhouse weed shop right before Margarita storm, I frequently stumble there.

When is Pattaya city going to fix their sidewalks? They have allowed private businesses to steal 90% of the sidewalks in Pattaya. Soi Buokaw is pretty much void of sidewalks nowadays. On all the side sois to beach road the sidewalks have been stolen by bars and restaurants. Sidewalks on walking street are completely gone.

The company which will get the order will have to work up to next century, I suppose.🙏

Motor bikes?

You can propose and build anything new and fancy and use big words to describe it, but if you don't manage your infrastructure consistently, with consequences for violators, you get nowhere in the long run.

I would estimate this is the 10,000th post on this theme.
