The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has rolled out a major initiative to transform the country into a regional aviation hub. By 2037, Thailand aims to accommodate 270 million air travellers per year and establish itself as a key hub for cargo.

 

This ambitious initiative dovetails with the government’s broader “Ignite Thailand” scheme, designed to enhance the nation's standing in tourism, medical treatment, food, logistics, electric vehicles, digital economy, and finance by 2030.

The strategy unfolds in three stages:

 

Stage One (by 2025):
The first phase involves bolstering airport capabilities to support 1.2 million flights and 180 million passengers annually. Additionally, the minimum connecting time (MCT) for international connections should not exceed 75 minutes.

 

Stage Two (2026-2028):
By the end of this phase, Thailand aims for airport capacity to handle 1.4 million flights and 210 million passengers annually. During this period, the MCT will be reduced to under 60 minutes.

 

Stage Three (2029-2037):
The final stage will see airports supporting up to 2.1 million flights and 270 million passengers each year. The MCT goal is further reduced to under 45 minutes. By this stage, Thailand aims to rank among the top five countries in the Asia-Pacific region for airfreight volume.

 

 

To realise these goals, CAAT plans to work closely with relevant bodies such as the Department of Airports, Airports of Thailand, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, Civil Aviation Training Centre, and Suvarnabhumi Airport hotel. This collaboration is critical to ensuring a cohesive effort in meeting the set targets.

 

If successful, this initiative will position Thailand as a significant player in global aviation, contributing extensively to its economic and infrastructural development.

Fits all very well with some headline I saw about being 3+ hours ahead at the airport (once again).

Seems the weekly promotion of new airports, airport upgrades, and this aviation hub, is the new go to, good feel story.

 In the year before COVID Thailand had 39 million visitors. Next year we are planning for 180 million arrivals by air. Where are these poor folk going to stay. They mention Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel, and I have stayed there myself and like it, but with 140 million other people it might be a bit crowded. Ahhh you say, they'll expand the number of rooms next year (What to accomodate 40 million people? 60 million people? 100 million people?) Ahhhh but we are going to be the hub of family visitors we only so for 160 visitors we only need 40 million rooms. 

Less a 'plan' and more like wishful thinking. Who hires the people that create this nonsense? Fire them immediately....they are stupid.

Fully agree, was just highlighting that some of the statements on aviation, that just seem to get repeated.

 

Last week it was the the turn for the often talked about upgrade to Hua Hin Airport

At Suvarnabhumi for a number of years at least, they had New Zealand upside down on their World map. Hardly an advertisement for competence..
