Motorcycle taxis causes traffic gridlock during Pattaya concert
A major hip-hop concert at Legend Siam created severe traffic chaos in Pattaya at the weekend, as hundreds of motorcycle taxis caused gridlock by parking illegally in the streets. The venue, located roughly 20 kilometres from central Pattaya, drew large crowds that overwhelmed the city’s already tourist-heavy traffic system on Saturday, November 23. The situation deteriorated when motorcycle taxi drivers parked their vehicles in traffic lanes, significantly reducing road capacity and creating kilometres-long traffic jams. Multiple lanes were rendered unusable, leaving minimal space for regular traffic flow. Residents expressed their discontent with both the lack of organised parking arrangements and proper registration systems for the event. The problems were compounded by the existing heavy tourist traffic in the area. Many questioned whether concert organisers had obtained the necessary permits and implemented adequate traffic management plans. Of particular concern was the behaviour of local motorcycle taxi drivers, who were reported to be blocking not only roads but also access to residential properties. With the concert scheduled to continue for another evening, residents braced for a second night of traffic disruption. The incident sparked calls for enhanced regulations, with residents demanding better event management practices. Proposed solutions include implementing a formal registration system for motorcycle taxi drivers and ensuring they hold proper public licenses. There is also a push to prioritise local drivers to better serve community needs, reported Pattaya Mail. In similar news, Patong’s traffic woes continue to frustrate local government agencies as Mayor Chalermsak Maneesri highlights the challenges faced due to private ownership of Soi Saensabai. The notorious Phuket street is known for traffic congestion and safety hazards and has seen several pedestrian injuries, including those involving foreign tourists. The inability of Patong Municipality to impose any regulations or initiate improvements on this privately owned road remains a primary concern. Chalermsak explained that the municipality’s attempts to alleviate these issues have been consistently thwarted by the fact that Soi Saensabai is privately owned. A shocking incident unfolded yesterday evening in a restaurant in the Thung Sukhla area of Si Racha, Chon Buri, as a factory worker shot his senior colleague amidst a heated argument. Police later apprehended the suspect at his girlfriend’s house. CCTV footage captured the dramatic turn of events where approximately five colleagues, including the suspect, Phrommongkol, were drinking beer at a restaurant in Si Racha. Tensions escalated between Phrommongkol and the victim, Pornchai, leading to a verbal altercation. Initially, Phrommongkol left the restaurant on his motorcycle around 6pm, yesterday, November 24, but returned approximately 40 minutes later, rejoining the group for drinks. The situation deteriorated as another argument erupted. In a fit of rage, Phrommongkol drew a firearm from his waist and shot Pornchai once. He then fled the scene on his motorcycle. Local police were alerted to the shooting at 7.30pm, with officers from Laem Chabang Police Station and emergency response teams quickly arriving at the scene. Despite medical efforts at Vibharam Hospital, Pornchai succumbed to his injuries. The tragic event prompted Police Colonel Papanpat to instruct his investigative team to examine CCTV footage and track the suspect’s escape route. The footage revealed Phrommongkol heading towards Bang Lamung, prompting an immediate manhunt by local law enforcement. By 1am today, police successfully tracked 28 year old Phrommongkol at a residence in Bang Lamung. They seized a homemade blank gun, .380 ACP ammunition, a blue t-shirt, and a pair of black sandals. During police interrogation, Phrommongkol confessed to the shooting, recounting that the victim’s derogatory remarks, questioning respect and threatening violence provoked his anger. “I planned to scare him initially but he wouldn’t stop talking, so I lost control and shot him.” Phrommongkol admitted to discarding the weapon in a local pond before returning home, only to be apprehended by police shortly thereafter. He cooperated with police, leading them to the location where he disposed of the firearm. Pol. Col. Papanpat emphasised the swift response to the incident and the coordinated efforts to capture the suspect. Police were able to determine Phrommongkol’s hideout at his girlfriend’s residence through diligent investigation and surveillance. The suspect confessed to all charges, including premeditated murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a firearm in public without justifiable cause, and discharging a firearm in a public area. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is set to lead a Cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai on Friday, November 29, marking a significant effort to bolster northern Thailand’s tourism and economic recovery following severe floods. This event is part of a broader Cabinet tour of the northern provinces, including Chiang Rai, scheduled from November 28 to December 1. The Cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai is a pivotal component of the government’s strategy to rejuvenate the northern economy. Jirayu Houngsub, spokesperson for the PM’s Office, highlighted that the meeting is one of many activities aimed at promoting tourism in the region. The 38 year old PM will focus on inspecting measures to combat wildfires and haze, which typically disrupt tourism from late winter through summer. Addressing these environmental challenges is crucial as they have long-term impacts on the region’s appeal to tourists. The promotion of tourism in the aftermath of the floods takes precedence on the agenda. Tourism is anticipated to play a vital role in driving economic growth and generating income for the region. Jirayu spoke on tourism promotion in northern provinces. “Tourism promotion in the northern provinces in the post-flood period is also high on the agenda as tourism is expected to be a core mechanism to help generate income and spur the region’s economy.” The PM, along with Cabinet ministers, will depart for Chiang Mai at 8pm on November 28, flying from the Royal Air Force’s Wing 6 in Don Mueang district to Chiang Mai International Airport. The mobile Cabinet meeting will commence at 10am on November 29 at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University in Mae Rim district. The day’s agenda also includes addressing the preparation for tackling seasonal bushfires and the associated PM2.5 ultra-fine dust pollution, a recurring environmental issue that requires immediate attention. Beyond the scheduled events in Chiang Mai, the Bangkok-born PM will continue her tour to the neighbouring province of Chiang Rai. Here, she will participate in a meeting focused on economic recovery and flood prevention plans in Mae Sai district, reported Bangkok Post.
