Frozen in time: British expats losing out on pensions in Thailand
It's not exactly advertised that if you retire to certain countries your state pension will be frozen. But the problem is only likely to get worse as the people who used to retire to Spain for more sunshine and a lower cost of living, especially those with too little income to get a Spanish retirement visa, start to look further afield for a place where they can live with more sunshine, and a lower cost of living than the UK. I know it's going to happen to me (when I get too old to do the 183 days a year in the UK and decide to stop flying back and forth). But I'm not even retired yet, and a state pension is not going to be my only source of income. -

'I've never liked him': See how JD Vance changed his tune on Trump "Ohio Sen. JD Vance has been formally nominated to become Donald Trump's running mate in the 2024 presidential election. But back in 2016, he was a fierce opponent, saying Trump could be "America's Hitler." " July 15, 2024 [past Vance comments on Trump reported in this CNN video report] https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/15/politics/video/jd-vance-trump-pivot-digvid -

Ukraine ... Enlighten yourself
As Turkey has demonstrated with its use of the Montreux Convention, it closed ingress and egress to the Black Sea to the Russian fleet. There is no need for NATO to control Sevastopol for it to control the Black Sea. -

Depends how much you earned... I left the UK because I was fed up paying £4K a month in tax and NI contributions. -

V P Debate
ABC News' fact check of the VP debate comments: "WALZ CLAIM: Gov. Walz said, "The persons closest to them, to Donald Trump, said he is unfit for the highest office. That is Senator Vance." FACT-CHECK: True Vance has shifted his view toward Trump since he first rose to prominence. Early in his career, Vance made a number of comments that were disparaging toward Trump. The specific comment that Walz seems to be referencing here is from a 2016 New York Times op-ed written by Vance ahead of the release of his book "Hillbilly Elegy." In the op-ed, Vance wrote, "Mr. Trump is unfit for our nation's highest office." [emphasis added] In years since the op-ed was published, Vance has said his views on Trump changed." https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/fact-checking-tim-walz-jd-vances-vp-debate/story?id=114405195 -

The "let's commit pension fraud" option. Unless you do as I intend to do - which is use the UK address for just over 6 months of the year (in the summer), and the Thai address for the rest of the year (skipping the UK winter). Avoids the new Thai tax changes (admittedly a lot of my work pension is in Hong Kong, so is exempt from all that anyway), and means you still get the annual increase in the state pension, and access to the NHS when there. -

Toppings for toast?
First saw mention of "dummies" in a mailing list. I had to ask. In America we call these pacifiers. -

Not mentioned is that the pensioners portrayed in the article are not in large number. It's the pensioners enjoying life in India, Pakistan, Africa and the Middle East who make up the bulk of foreign retirees. Retirees with the adjustments today are receiving far more than they ever contributed. -

What is it with the continual complaining about the spending on asylum seekers. The asylum seeker spending is taken straight out of the foreign aid budget. (The people that actually pay for the cost of asylum seekers are the people in the countries where we would have spent the foreign aid money.) Anyway, the amount spent on asylum seekers is due to the slow processing of claims for asylum (because granted and given the right to work, or disallowed and no longer entitled to stay in the country - either way, you stop paying to house them as asylum seekers). -

The classic tune from one of my favourite movies Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It was one of the last movies to use actual extras, before CGI eliminated the need for them. It's a feel good movie infused with love and fun. May the USA be restored to a place of safety, harmony and happiness.
