Driver Falls Asleep, Crashes Pickup Truck into Coffee Shop, Causing Extensive Damage

In the early hours of the morning of October 28, a black Toyota Revo pickup truck veered off course and crashed into a popular coffee shop, causing extensive damage estimated at over one million baht. The incident occurred in Map Ta Phut district, Rayong, when the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

 

Police Lieutenant Samai Sadi of the Map Ta Phut Police Station responded to the accident at the M Building branch of the well-known coffee chain. The shop, located over a hundred metres from the main road, sustained serious damage as the vehicle shattered its glass façade, crashed through a wall into a meeting room, and finally came to a halt in front of the counter.

 

Upon arrival, authorities found shattered glass and debris scattered across the coffee shop floor, with damaged furniture and equipment indicating the force of the crash. The driver, Mr. Paitoon, 43, from Sa Kaeo province, was unharmed but appeared visibly shaken.

 

Shop owner Mr. Sinatchai, 41, expressed his disbelief, stating, “I still can’t understand how this happened. The shop is far from the road, yet the truck managed to crash right into it.” CCTV footage revealed that the pickup truck had gradually swerved off Mabya Road, climbed the sidewalk, hit a municipal parking sign, and continued into the coffee shop, destroying walls and furniture along its path.

 

The owner’s wife, Ms. Ruttirada, 38, recounted how she and her husband were away at a reservoir in Khao Chuk when they received news of the incident. She expressed her deep sadness upon returning and reviewing the footage, still bewildered by the incident’s severity.

 

Mr. Paitoon, who was driving from the Lan Pun Market intersection, admitted to police that he fell asleep and lost control, causing the truck to drift off the road and crash into the shop. He has been charged with reckless driving resulting in property damage and will face legal proceedings.
