Morning All,

A few days ago I bought a '21 BMW X1.  Great little car.  I have a question about servicing (maybe someone knows?)

The car comes with a 5 year BMW warranty and I'd like to keep it.  In the UK you don't have to have the car serviced by a BMW authorised garage to keep this, as long as OEM parts are installed, the manufacturer warranty is maintained.

The issue I have here is the nearest dealer is a four hour drive and their ratings on google are terrible.  My friend is an ex-bmw service tech and can order all the OEM parts and do the service for me.  I trust this guy to do a good job.

I'm hoping the same conditions as the UK for servicing apply here.  Does anyone know?  I did write to BMW Thailand but heard nothing back.

TIA,
Fezza

How are BMW going to know if your friend did the job? The only possible problem is if regular servicing must be maintained with their stamp in the service book in order to keep the warranty valid. But this is Thailand, many cars have no service book anyway as they have been clocked.

Servicing is stored on the car computer itself, with the registered BMW dealers code next to each service in the computer.  There's no more stamp in a service book on modern cars.

I think you will find that the service records are on the dealer network computer.

Service for the x1 diesel is every 12,000 km so just get the work done by BMW until 2026. After that go independent. But even then you are still paying inflated prices for OEM parts. OEM parts are far more expensive then in the UK even though VAT is 7% here compared to 20%. We just purchased a X1 F48 used brake servo in the UK, cost GBP45. New one from BMW Thailand would be 26,500 THB (GBP600). BMW UK price is GBP388.

I just heard back from BMW Thailand.  All services must be done at the Authorised Dealer to keep the warranty.

Unlike in Europe, consumers in Thailand have no "right to repair". We tend to think that the plain sensible, commonsense rules, we are accustomed to in our home country, apply universally, but they do not.
