According to Internet blogger Miles Mathis, it is a hoax.

Excerpts:

Quote

[Update November 23, 2024: The trial has already finished. That was fast. Fast because—yep, you
guessed it—it was a bench trial, with no jury. It took less than four days. The defense not only
waived their right to a jury trial, they requested a bench trial. Proving this was another fake, run in a
dummy court. You shouldn't be able to get a bench trial for first-degree murder, but I guess we are
supposed to believe you can, if your lawyer is stupid enough. But since this attorney was state-
assigned, the judge should have replaced him once he requested a bench trial. Any real judge would
know the attorney was insane, and replace him if not disbar him immediately.

Quote

And we have the same problem we always find in these fakes: the district attorney isn't involved in this
Laken Riley case, although it is allegedly the most high profile case to ever hit the county. Deborah
Gonzalez is the DA, but she isn't involved. She handed this off to a prosecutor named Sheila Ross.
Who is Sheila Ross? Well, she isn't a deputy or assistant DA in those counties, we are told she is a
prosecutor from the Prosecuting Attorneys Council, whatever that is. Prosecuting theatrical, I guess.

Well, that's just an appetizer.

More, much more, at the link.

Miles Mathis makes a hobby of debunking hoaxes and their associated legal "soap operas".

Fun reading.

I hope there are lots of thoughtful comments, especially from any lawyers seeing this.

And, since this is a forum about Thailand, I'm wondering how we might identify similar machinations here.

And what the motives might be.

(Or do we just say, "all of them are" and the motive is money and power?  I expect that would cover everything.)
