On a historic Saturday in Paris, the resounding chimes of Notre-Dame Cathedral’s bells marked the reopening of the iconic 860-year-old landmark, symbolically ushered in by the Archbishop of Paris with three ceremonial knocks on the grand wooden doors. The event celebrated the meticulous restoration of the cathedral, which had suffered devastating damage in a 2019 fire, and brought together an illustrious gathering of world leaders, cultural figures, and artisans.

Notre Dame Cathedral 'back in the light!' After 5 years of restoration following the devastating fire, the iconic cathedral welcomes the world again. Watch the historic moment with 1,500 attendees, including 40 heads of state.

French President Emmanuel Macron led the ceremony, acknowledging the extraordinary effort that went into the cathedral’s revival. “I stand before you to express the gratitude of the French nation, our gratitude to all those who saved, helped and rebuilt the cathedral,” Macron declared. The event underscored the resilience and unity that made the restoration possible.

The guest list was a testament to the global significance of Notre-Dame. Among the attendees were U.S. First Lady Jill Biden, President-elect Donald Trump, British royal Prince William, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Elon Musk, the Tesla billionaire and adviser to Trump’s transition team, was also present, alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and former French presidents François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. Macron, emphasizing the sense of shared accomplishment, proclaimed, “Tonight we can together share joy and pride. Long live Notre-Dame de Paris, long live the Republic and long live France.”

The restoration has returned the cathedral to its former splendor. A new spire, rib vaulting, flying buttresses, and the intricate stone gargoyles have been meticulously reconstructed, while gleaming white stone and gold accents now radiate the grandeur that has drawn millions of admirers over the centuries. The careful work reflects not just architectural expertise but also a profound respect for cultural heritage.

For Macron, the event also carried significant political weight. Securing the attendance of Donald Trump and hosting a meeting with Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy at the Élysée Palace ahead of the ceremony underscored his diplomatic finesse, particularly as he navigates a challenging domestic political landscape following the ousting of his prime minister by parliament.

The reopening of Notre-Dame serves as a symbol of renewal and unity, not only for France but for the world. As the lights illuminated the cathedral and the festivities concluded, the message was clear: the enduring spirit of Notre-Dame de Paris shines brightly once again.

"You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with cheese in France?"

"They don't call it a quarter pounder with cheese?"

"It's called 'A Royale with cheese.'"
