Transgender Advocates Stage Bathroom Sit-In at U.S. Capitol in Protest of Proposed Policy

A group of over two dozen transgender advocates and allies staged a sit-in protest at a U.S. Capitol women’s restroom on Thursday, voicing their opposition to a proposed policy targeting the first openly transgender member of Congress. The demonstration took place near House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office and was organized in response to a measure introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., that seeks to restrict access to restrooms based on biological sex.

The proposed policy, introduced in October, specifically aims to bar Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, D-Del., from using women’s restrooms in the Capitol. Mace defended the resolution, saying it would prevent individuals from using facilities inconsistent with their biological sex, declaring, “I am absolutely 100% going to stand in the way of any man who wants to be in a women’s restroom, in our locker rooms, in our changing rooms.”

Protesters, organized by the Gender Liberation Movement, gathered both inside and outside the women’s restroom closest to Speaker Johnson’s office. Video footage of the sit-in captures the demonstrators chanting, “Speaker Johnson, Nancy Mace, our genders are no debate.”

Among the 25 demonstrators, about 15 were arrested for violating a Washington, D.C., code related to crowding and obstructing within the Cannon House Office Building, according to Brianna Burch, a spokesperson for the U.S. Capitol Police. High-profile participants included Chelsea Manning, a former Army intelligence officer and transgender advocate, and Raquel Willis, a prominent journalist and author.

Manning, reflecting on her participation, emphasized the personal stakes of the fight. “I’m not here as a leader or a spokesperson but simply as another member of my community who shows up unconditionally to support my siblings in this fight,” she said in a statement. “I will stand beside them no matter what. We didn’t start this fight, but we are together now.”

The sit-in underscored the growing tensions surrounding transgender rights and representation in political spaces. Protesters criticized the proposed policy as an attempt to marginalize and erase the experiences of transgender individuals, urging lawmakers to reconsider measures they view as discriminatory. The protest marks a significant act of resistance in an ongoing battle for LGBTQ+ rights within the U.S. legislative landscape.

False equivalence.

Yeah Patriots waving flags versus dudes in dresses and bad makeup pretending that they're women. I guess the better equivalents would be normal human beings versus freaks?

No one is above the law, especially perverts who live in fantasy lands

Lost in all of this is that EVERY member of Congress has their own, private bathroom in their own, private office.  No need for them to use the facilities designed for visitors.

Don't be absurd. They would be far from the house floor.

Then why are they protesting in the office building that houses members of Congress? Makes no sense.

Well then the pore thangs will just have to drop their pantyhose and lift their skirts at a urinal like any other cross dressing freak.

Just open an extra bathroom for freaks somewhere in a corner.

Did you expect any sense from them?

So they've put themselves in the toilet...

Best place for them. May I suggest locking them in for a month or two?

It comes just before Tiranny. I am just making fun of some of our members that type things like rasist but couldn't define the words. Fascialism+ fascism.; rasist=racist. Just Tugging your rope.
