The third time Anna Liedtke was subjected to an illegal strip-search in Israeli detention, female prison guards forced her on to her knees, covered her mouth to stop her screaming and raped her, according to interviews and a criminal complaint filed in Israel.

She described hearing male guards laughing during the attack, which she believes they watched and may have filmed. It took place in an area separated from the prison hallway by a partially drawn curtain that her attackers had left open.

Liedtke, 25, joined a flotilla sailing from Europe to Gaza with humanitarian aid last autumn. Israeli forces intercepted her boat in international waters on 8 October and took her to Israel, where she was detained for five days.

The abuse and violence directed at flotilla participants in Israeli prisons, including rape, was intended to intimidate, Liedtke said. “It’s clear they want to break our will and silence us, making this so traumatic that we will never talk about Palestine again,” she told the Guardian.

Body cavity searches in jails do happen .

A body cavity search, also known simply as a cavity search, is either a visual search or a manual internal inspection of body cavities for prohibited materials (contraband), such as illegal drugs, money, jewelry, or weapons. Body cavities frequently used for concealment include the mouth, vagina, and rectum. It is far more invasive than the standard strip search that is typically performed on individuals taken into custody, either upon police arrest or incarceration at a jail, prison, or psychiatric hospital. Often the procedure is repeated when the person leaves the institution.

Body cavity searches may also be conducted at some international border crossings such as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection when they suspect international travelers of hiding contraband—such as drugs

The woman was probably strip searched before going into jail and now clamming its rape as part of her campaign against Israel

BUT, it is inconceivable that this young woman or, indeed, any of the flotilla activists would be carrying "drugs, money, jewelry, or weapons" in their, ahem, "body cavities".

They've just been stopped attempting to smuggle illegal goods to a terrorist organisation .

If it is refused, a senior officer must come to hear objections and authorise any subsequent search in writing. Strip-searches are limited to visual inspection of a naked body and must be in a closed room with only female officers present.

Liedtke said she refused to be strip-searched but was still forced to remove her clothes in an area only partly concealed by a curtain.

What BS, Nick. The flotilla was not carrying any goods that could be of us to Hamas fighters. Funny, I think the flotilla activists are a little smarter than to carry dope to almost certain arrest.

Sexual penetration--rape--is definitely not normal practice in prisons. However, it is reported both here and from Palestinian prisoners, both male and female, penetrated by objects.

I don't think this will deter anyone from the next flotilla.

We aren't talking about what was aboard the Flotilla , we are talking about prisoners being personally searched before going into jail. rather than what the flotillas cargo was .

Packer, I fully agree with you that this was rape. The trouble is, often security personnel (police, soldiers, prison guards) get together and make up a uniform story. When this gets to court, I'm sure this will happen.

The only reason this case might succeed and in the process create more stringent rules for all prisons is that she's a foreigner and white. Palestinians are suffering the same indignities every day in Israeli prisons.
