Taking The Driver's Licence Test

Featured Replies

I have a driver's licence for car from Sweden, which I know is pretty simple to transfer to a thai driver's licence, but I would like to get a motor cycle licence in Thailand as well.

How hard are the tests? Do you have to bring your own bike? Does the bike need to be automatic or manual geared?

I just got both car & moto yesterday. I needed to test for moto only. I only had about 15 minutes to study, took test on computer (English language) 30 questions. First time answered 9 incorrect, allowed to take again. Second time missed 5 and passed. No more than 7 questions answered incorrectly will get you a passing grade.

Next driving test on a course. Motocy available for rent (bt30). Very easy, course is laid out with arrows and road signs. Pay attention to road signs and use directionals when needed. Slow & easy, I never took it out of second gear.

I took my driving test in Udon, so it may differ depending on your location.

I had a similar experience in Phuket. Easy written test, bikes available at the site for rent from some enterprising sort. Also some vision exam.

I am not sure if your Swedish license will transfer. I had an International Driving License which you can get a Thai license with. Not sure about your countries license though.

I did mine in Phitsanulok it went about the same, no problem both car and bike.

Yeah, the test is a joke -- both the car and the motorcycle. It is great entertainment just to go down to the test centre and watch the incompetent idiots who apparently didn't see the need to practice parallel parking, or even turning corners before sitting their test. And these people were passing -- unleashed on the roads and parking lots of Thailand to steam through zebra crossings and bash in the rear quarter panels of parked cars, (or willfully mow down indignant bus passengers for that matter). As far as I'm concerned, if you can't slot into the parking space in three forward-reverse sections or less (if you know what you are doing, it should only be one), you should be sent home and told to learn to control your vehicle before coming back. Many of these guys (and more so, girls) were doing the reverse-forward shift ten times or more, clearly having no idea of the parameters of their dad's car.

For the motorcycle test, stay in second gear the whole way and let the auto clutch do the work -- you never need any acceleration anyway. In first gear, the Honda Dream stylebike can be pretty jerky -- it is deliberately low so that it can pull a trailer full of pigs up a mountain.
