Thailand's 'Dual Prime Minister' System: A Delicate Balance of Power

Featured Replies

This arrangement reflects a carefully orchestrated strategy where Thaksin remains the mastermind behind the scenes, while Paetongtarn assumes the official role of prime minister, executing policies and managing the government.

She does nothing unless told too by father.

Well, if I'm going to school then as your teacher🤣

Your world can see only black and white.

However there are many color shades between.

"Bogus doctor" and "scams". This comes with development of this country. It's not a dictatorship like North Korea. And what achievements you can get with a guided democracy takes place now.

And healthcare is one of the best I've been told by experts.

Drug fighting is a problem in the whole world. Not a special thing in Thailand.

Raping is an issue. It's a crime and has to be followed. The frequency is very high in EU countries. I don't have equivalent figures for Thailand.

Expenses for Arms is ridiculous low. Not even 1.5% of GDP.

you must have been in the movie eyes wide shut  THAILAND is NOT a democracy simple as that run by despots. coruption out of control, no rule of law, yep 4th world country  people wanting a coup,  and again WHY buy  Arms if their is no need, spend the money on the people

Not a substantial reply unfortunately.

I think you're making false claims.

But maybe I'm wrong?

To get this straight:

1. What makes a democracy? Free elections? Elected parliament, elected PM. But obviously, as I understand you think there is more?

Give me your point.

2. No law rules. As far as I know there are indeed rules. If you check today's threads you'll read a lot about detained criminals. But again, what make you think there are no law rules??

3. People want a coup? I can't see that. Please help me with it. When was that?

4. Arms. There is a parliament which agreed spending 1.4% of GDP for arms. So it was done voluntarily. But tell me why they (the parliament) is not allowed to vote for these expenses.

I'm ready to read your answer😊

Thaksin is the real prime minister! The daughter is just a PUPPET!!! Send him back to Dubai!!!

There is no system or model. It’s one guy bending/breaking the rules to stay in power

You are right about rule bending to stay in power, but there are many involved in the bending process on both sides of every political party, more so these days than ever.

A flame and the bickering replies have been removed.

@newbee2022 can you discuss the topic, instead of the constant trolling personal attacks, which just deflect the topic.

(I do not think that he has actually killed anyone - yet.)

Those traits that you describe are true for every PM in Thailand during at least the last 25 years.

A 'dual PM system' is the norm here. The others have had their strings pulled by people out of sight.

Thaksin is just more honest about it.

I think the killing people is in regards to his 'war on drugs' where extra judicial killings were conducted, basically to his order. Many of them later to be found to have had no basis.

Sorry, but he didn't give an order to go out and kill people.  He was brought up on charges, but there was no evidence that he gave an order to kill people. So blame the police, they didn't need to kill people they were supposed to arrest.

However, we all know why the police killed the users / dealers because it would all point back to the police.

Him helping guide things I think is a good thing, as I recall when he was PM things were very good, he balanced the budget, GDP went from 4.9 trillion baht (2001)  to 7.1 trillion baht (2006) foreign currency reserves went from 30 billion USD (2001) to 64 billion USD (2006)  he started the 30 baht medical, he started programs that helped the famers, poverty deceased.

Corrupt sure, they all are corrupt and it doesn't matter if it's Thailand or the USA.

Nothing "delicate" about it. It's a blatant lie and violation. He was supposed to steer clear of politics and said he would. Now she's the acting PM, with Daddy Puppet Masters hand up her backside, manipulating her every move. Nothing at all "delicate" about that 🤣

Thailand is in such bad economic shape I welcomed his return. Imo he is playing far too great a public role and needs to move to sidelines. Taksin talked a great and innovative game. Many announcements about investments. Much of it won't create many jobs, resources robbers (cheap power).

All the red shirt hand outs just vote buying. It inflates currency, adds to inflation.

Thailand is totally adrift. It cannot change bc doing so will rock the corrupt foundation of the country. It's already looking far more like Philippines than Malaysia.

Education is unmitigated catastrophe. The only schools that are preparing students for a 21st century future are top tier international schools. The rest are just wasting students time.

What's worse is let's say a student went abroad and received a top grade stem education and return to Thailand. Well there would be qualified for excellent jobs with lots of opportunity the question becomes how many of those jobs actually exist? Therefore, they're simply better off staying abroad. This provides far better wages and the future. And there is zero future for smart young people in this country.

It seems as of late the tire government is completely flipping out about losing certain numbers of taurus. The recent post here wines about potential lack of Chinese visitors. If Thailand expects 40 million tourists a year the time people will feel run through if they haven't already. What's worse about tourism is that only certain companies incorporations, individuals benefit from that narrow stream of revenue.

It's the same old export driven economy BS that is fine to get a developing country up and running but decades later they need to move on. The Dynamics in this nation have not allowed it to do so and I doubt it over will

From Human Rights Watch, Abuses and the War on Drugs Thaksin made his intentions even clearer in August 2003 when he said that Thai security forces would “shoot to kill” when they encountered drug traffickers,

dont know about you but thats a order to me !!!  as head of Goverment the buck stops there

From the news at the time

"Lawyers have suggested that Thaksin's drug war might amount to a crime against humanity under Article Seven of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court [ICC], set up in 1992."

Thaksin finds this funny. "I've done nothing wrong!" he laughs. "I just give the policy."

Human rights commissioner Wasant Panich thinks otherwise. "Those who devised the policy are primarily responsible for the deaths," he says. Mr Wasant believes that only the threat of an ICC trial will ensure this kind of incident never happens. Thailand signed the Rome Statute in 2000 but, under Thaksin, didn't ratify it.

Thaskin is NOT a good guy All he wants is power and money he does not give a shXX about thaland  he is as i stated a convicted felon killer and con man, Totally corupt stealing money from Thailand into his own coffers

You need to open your eyes and do research about Thaskin

Please tell me when he was convicted of murder.

Never said he was a good guy... However he was a good PM.

What money did he steal from Thailand?  You know he was a billionaire and owned a telecommunication company.

You might not want to admit it but he helped the Thai people allot. Allot of foreign investment at the time, Factories expanding production, new factories being built etc.  do you not understand how big it was to get 30 baht health coverage? that alone has helped millions of Thais.

I dont need to read about the war on drugs, I was here at the time and heard about it almost daily.

I think it was terrible time (about 3 months) and I blame the police for the killings.

If you review the Thai economy for the last 3 decades you'll understand how good things were when he was PM.

He also initiated allot of programs to help people.  He started the school loan program, 30 baht medical program, provided low interest loans to famers, He balanced the budget!

The Thai people didn't remove him from office, there was a coup by the army when Thaksin was in New York for a UN meeting.

He was really liked by the people at the time. He was the first democratically elected PM to complete his full term and then he was re-elected. This was amazing at the time.  All of my workers loved him.

Don't get me wrong, I dont really like the guy. He started all the immigration crap, but the truth is Thailand was very strong when he was PM.

As was I,  yes he did some good for the Thai people nobody is disputing that !!, but people dont remember the good things only the bad,! and boy was he bad !!! all out for himself, greedy man !!  and The results of his time as PM is that today we are left with a country bereft of commitment to basic democratic processes

You will be the pm I  will be in charge.Ok dad no problem  I follow your orders

Awaiting Yingluck’s triumphant return and it will be triple PMs. 3 for the price of 1. Thailand is so blessed indeed
