Car Tires

My 4 year old Honda Civic just turned 70,000 km on the original set of Bridgstone tires. The tread still looks ok but probably time to change. The Honda dealer wants B2100 per tire. Will also check with B-Quik. Where do others buy their tires and when do you replace?

2100 per tire doesn't seem to be too high, if they are good quality name brand ones. Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone, etc.

On US tires, you judge durability by the treadwear rating they are giving. B, A, AA, AAA, etc. AAA meaning its been given the highest treadwear rating. Not sure if that is applicable here, as I've never looked closely at my truck. (only 19k on it so far)

check the wear tabs inside the grove of the tire. a small rised line inside the grove is the wear limit point. if the wear is even and the marks are lower then the top of the grove then look for side wall for damage and don't let them tell you the fine cracks are bad its nomal. If that all checks then keep driving. dry rot can happen after around five years but normaly will show other problems first. I get about 100,000 and six years to a set. pay around 950 to 1200 for 13 inch tire. cheap is good enough its not F1 or NASCAR out there.

I have a civic also. I changed after about 2 years, and rougfhly 50/60K kms. I can't remember. Anyway, the tread was still ok, but I noticed I could break traction on take off and they didn;t seem as grippy as before. They will also harden as they get older and make more noise. I changed wheels to 17" with falken ziex tyres. They increased diameter adds to the noise, and these are AAA tyres. They seem grippy but are very hard.

Bt2100 seems an ok price for the regular tyres (4000+ for 17" tyres). Next time I want to get a softer compoud to try to reduce noise. They may wear quicker, but will grip better and they would be replaced after 2 yrs anyway.
