Heavy rains threaten crop damage in flooded Northeast

KALASIN: -- Heavy rain caused flood in Thailand's northeastern provinces, damaging paddy fields while disaster prevention and mitigation officials warned of possible landslides.

Continuous rainfall caused rising water in three river systems.

About 8,000 rai or 3,200 acres of farmlands are under floodwaters as the river has overflowed its banks in Yangtalad district.

Yangtalad district chief Narongchai Tipkanok visited flood-hit areas, saying that four sub-districts have been inundated and gravel roads connecting villages have been eroded by the flooding. If the waters don't recede within a few days, the current paddy crops will be damaged.

Weerasak Wichiensan, an official of the local disaster prevention and mitigation service, said a depression which triggered the rains has weakened but the rain will continue for a while.

The run-off on the Phuphan mountain range may trigger flash floods and landslides, he said, warning that low-lying areas should brace for such an event.

Pramote Sajjarak, deputy governor of Ubon Ratchathani said the local authorities have speeded up assistance to help flood victims in two districts.

Mr. Pramote said more than 4,700 houses in six districts were affected by flood.

Over 15,000 rai, or some 6,000 acres of farmlands, were damaged by the flood.

Local residents in four districts near Phanomdongrak mountaiin particular have been warned of a mudslide.
